What makes sexy swimwear work is where the fabric sits rather than how little there is. The styles here are defined by where the fabric is placed rather than how little of it there is. A deep V, a cut-out at the waist, an open back, a single shoulder — each changes the silhouette by drawing a line somewhere unexpected, and each works on the same construction as a full-coverage suit.
That distinction matters practically, not just semantically. A suit that shows more skin still needs the same lining, the same edge finish and the same strap adjustment as any other. Skip those and you get a garment that photographs well and cannot be worn for an afternoon. Anyone looking for the sexiest swimwear for women usually still wants it to stay in position while they stand up.
Four shapes account for most of this category, and they suit different things.
Plunge necklines lengthen the torso and draw the eye vertically. They need structure — see the next section.
Cut-outs break the silhouette at the waist or ribcage, which creates definition without removing coverage anywhere it matters. Cut out one pieces keep a one-piece's hold while opening up the line, which makes them the most wearable option in this group.
Open backs keep full front coverage and drop the back entirely. Practically this is the least demanding of the four: nothing at the front changes, so support is unaffected. See open back styles.
Asymmetric cuts shift the line diagonally, which reads as deliberate design rather than exposure. They also cover more than they appear to.
What all four have in common is that the coverage is redistributed rather than reduced. A cut-out at the ribcage removes fabric from a place that was never load-bearing; the bust and seat coverage stays exactly where it was. That is why these shapes work on more body types than their photographs suggest.
This is the part almost no one mentions, and it decides whether a low-cut suit works or not.
A deep front removes the fabric that would normally hold the bust inward. Without structure, the cups spread outward and the neckline gapes the moment you lean forward — and no amount of adjusting fixes it, because there is nothing there to adjust. The suit is doing exactly what its construction allows.
What fixes it is a wire or a properly molded cup. Underwire styles hold the bust from underneath and inward simultaneously, which is precisely what a plunge needs. Molded cups do it less firmly but adequately for smaller busts. An unlined triangle does neither.
The band matters as much as the cup. A firm underband is what carries the weight; if it rides up your back, the band is loose and going up a whole size makes it worse. And for lift specifically, push up styles work through cup construction rather than padding thickness — molded shapes hold when wet, loose foam inserts wrinkle and shift.
One practical note on color: pale and white suits in low-cut shapes turn translucent when wet unless they are fully lined, which is worth confirming in the description before ordering. The same applies to any style with a cut-out near the bust, where the lining is doing structural work as well as opacity. If the description mentions only a print and a color, assume it is single-layer.
Silicone tape along the neckline edge is what keeps a deep front where it should be, and it costs the maker almost nothing to include.
A cover-up decides what a revealing suit is actually usable for, which is why the two get searched together more often than either gets searched alone.
A sheer kaftan leaves the suit visible and adds a layer, which is the right call when the suit is the point. An opaque tunic or shirt dress hides it completely and turns the same suit into something you can walk into a restaurant wearing. A sarong sits between the two and covers the lower half only, which suits a day that moves between the water and a table. See cover ups, or matched sets where the layer is chosen for the suit.
