Yes, though the label is used loosely and it is worth knowing what it should mean. Petite in swimwear refers to torso length, not to being slim or small overall — a shorter distance between shoulder and crotch. That is a proportion, and it appears at every size, which is why our range runs XS to 6XL rather than stopping partway.
Some brands use "petite" simply to mean small sizes, which helps nobody. If a listing describes a petite suit but says nothing about torso length or strap adjustment, it is probably the former.
This is the actual problem, and it produces a very specific set of symptoms. A one-piece pulls down at the shoulders and up at the crotch simultaneously. The neckline sits lower than it should. Straps dig in. Nothing you do makes it comfortable, because the fabric between the two points is simply longer than the distance it has to span.
The instinctive fix is to buy a size down. It does not work: the torso length shortens slightly but the bust and hip measurements shrink too, so you trade one bad fit for another. Going up makes the pulling worse while adding excess elsewhere. Size is not the variable.
To confirm this is your issue rather than a width problem, measure from the top of your shoulder, down the front, through the crotch and back up to the same shoulder. Compare that total with the size chart figure for your size. If it is noticeably shorter, torso length is what you are fighting.
Three things, in order of how much difference they make.
Fully adjustable straps are the single most useful feature available. They let you shorten the body of a suit without changing its width, which is precisely the adjustment needed. Metal or coated sliders hold better than plain plastic on wet fabric.
Two-piece styles sidestep the problem entirely, because there is no fixed torso length to get wrong. A tankini gives one-piece coverage with none of the vertical constraint, which is why it is the most reliable purchase if you have had repeated one-piece problems.
Higher-cut leg openings lengthen the leg line visually, which helps if you are short overall rather than only short-waisted. This one is cosmetic rather than structural, but it is a real effect.
The most useful thing available to a short torso is not a petite label at all. A two-piece removes the torso-length problem outright, because nothing has to span from shoulder to crotch in a single fixed measurement, and that is the constraint causing every symptom above.
A tankini top cut to a standard length will simply sit lower on a shorter body, which reads as more coverage rather than as a fit problem. Pair it with a bottom sized to your hips and the two decisions stop competing. Swim shorts and skirted bottoms work on the same principle, and both sidestep the measurement entirely. See tankinis and swim shorts.
One caveat: a bottom cut for a longer body sits higher on the waist than the design intended. Usually that is welcome, since a higher waistband smooths the stomach and lengthens the leg. Occasionally it is not, and it is worth expecting either outcome before ordering.
These two requirements arrive together often, and there is a conflict worth knowing about. A shaping panel needs vertical space to work — it smooths across a distance. On a short torso, a full-length panel can end up compressing rather than smoothing, because it has less room to distribute the effect.
The answer is a ruched front rather than a firm panel. Gathering works over any length, since the effect comes from texture rather than from tension across a span. Our tummy control range includes ruched styles with adjustable straps, which is the combination to look for. Prefer to split it into two pieces? A high-waisted bottom under a shorter tankini top covers the middle without any torso-length issue at all, and a swim dress is worth avoiding unless the straps adjust, since the skirt adds visual width where you have less height.
