What Does Intimates Actually Cover?

The word turns up on every clothing site and almost none of them explain it, so here it is plainly. Intimates is the retail term for everything worn against the skin under other clothes - bras, briefs, shapewear, slips and lingerie. It replaced underwear on category menus because it covers pieces that are worn for their own sake as well as for practical support.

What it does not include is sleepwear or lounge clothing, even though the two often sit next to each other in a menu. Anything worn to bed belongs with loungewear rather than here.

Within that definition, this section leans heavily one way. Bras are the bulk of what is stocked, with a small number of briefs and shapewear pieces alongside them, so it is a bra section with a few extras rather than a full underwear department.

Knowing that in advance saves time. If you are replacing a whole drawer, plan on the bras coming from here; if you want a matching set of everything, this is a starting point rather than a complete answer.

Push Up, Bandeau, Strapless and Seamless Bras

Four shapes cover most of what is here, and each exists to solve a different problem rather than to be a better version of the others. Bras and bra sets is where the whole group sits.

A push up adds shape at the bottom of the cup and lifts from underneath. A bandeau removes the straps and holds through the band alone, which makes band fit the entire question. A strapless does the same job with more structure, usually through a wider band and silicone along the top edge.

Seamless is the one bought for a reason you can see from the outside. A molded cup with no seam and a flat, bonded edge leaves no line under a fitted top, which is the whole point of it.

Whichever shape you choose, the band does most of the work of holding a bra in place, and straps do far less than people assume. A band that rides up at the back is loose, and going up a cup size makes that worse rather than better.

Adhesive and Backless Options

Adhesive bras are the quiet specialty of this section and the reason a lot of people arrive at it. They attach to the skin and leave the back and shoulders completely clear, which is the one thing no conventional bra can do.

They come in two forms. A one-piece silicone shell holds its own shape and gives a smooth line under fabric, and a two-piece pair of cups with a front clip pulls the bust closer together. The first is for coverage, the second is for shape.

Getting one to hold is mostly about the skin rather than the product. It needs to go on clean and dry, with no lotion or oil underneath, and pressing along the outer edge for a few seconds is what sets it. Applied that way it stays put for an evening.

Size down rather than up when you are between two. An adhesive cup that is slightly small stays flat against the body, while one that is slightly large lifts at the edge - and the edge is the part that shows through a thin top.

What to Wear Under a Dress or a Swimsuit

Most of the difficult cases come from a neckline. A wide or scooped neck moves the strap outward until it shows, and the fix is a bandeau or an adhesive style rather than a tighter strap. A halter neckline suits a bra with convertible straps that can cross or tie behind the neck.

Backless and open-backed cuts are the case that adhesive and backless options exist for, and a dress made that way is the one most often bought and then left on the hanger.

Under a pale or fitted dress, color matters more than the shape. A bra close to your own skin tone disappears under thin fabric, and a white one shows through it - which is the opposite of what most people expect.

Under swimwear the answer is usually nothing at all, since a swimsuit carries its own shaping. The exception is a wide-necked cover up worn over the top on the way home, where an adhesive pair does the job without adding a second set of straps.
