Cover Ups for Swimwear

Why Wear a Cover-Up at All?

Three reasons to own cover ups for swimwear, and modesty is only one of them.

The most practical is sun. Shoulders and the upper back burn before anywhere else, and if you are at a beach for five hours you are exposed for four and a half of them. A light layer does more reliably what reapplying sunscreen does unreliably.

The second is temperature. Wet swimwear in a breeze is genuinely cold, and a dry layer over the top fixes it faster than a towel.

The third is simply being dressed. Walking to a beach bar, picking up food, sitting somewhere with a floor — a cover-up means not having to decide whether swimwear is acceptable. It converts one suit into a full day out, which is why it tends to be the highest-value purchase in a swim wardrobe.

Can You Swim in One?

Generally no, and it is worth being clear about that. Most cover-ups are made from woven cotton, rayon, chiffon or crochet — fabrics that absorb water, become heavy, cling, and take a long time to dry. In water they are a hazard rather than a garment.

The exceptions are pieces cut from swim fabric or a light quick-drying knit, usually described as a swim shirt or a rash guard. Those are designed to be worn in water and will handle it. If the description mentions cotton or lining, treat it as a dry layer.

So the honest answer is that a cover-up is for before and after, not during. Plan to take it off.

Listings use swimwear cover up and womens swimwear coverups interchangeably; what matters is the fabric weight, not the name.

The Styles, and What Each Does

Five shapes cover almost everything on offer:

  • Kaftan — loose, often ankle or mid-calf, the most covered and the coolest in heat because nothing touches you.
  • Tunic — shorter and slightly more fitted, hip or thigh length. The most practical for walking.
  • Shirt or shirt dress — buttons through, so it doubles as a jacket and reads as ordinary clothing away from the beach.
  • Sarong or wrap — a length of fabric tied at the hip or bust, covering the lower half only. Packs smallest, and the tying methods are set out on our sarong cover ups page.
  • Beach skirt — the lower half again, but cut and sewn to a fixed shape rather than tied. Easier to walk in than a wrap and it stays where you put it.
  • Beach dress — a proper dress in light fabric, the most "dressed" option and the one that works for lunch.

Choosing by Fabric

Shape decides what a cover-up looks like. Fabric decides what it is like to wear over a wet swimsuit, which is the situation it actually spends most of its life in.

Cotton and cotton blends breathe well and feel best in dry heat, but they take on water and hold it for a long time — pleasant at midday, cold by six. Linen behaves much the same and creases, which reads as relaxed on sand and rather less so at a restaurant table. Chiffon and the lighter woven synthetics do the opposite: almost weightless, dry within minutes, and they hang away from damp skin instead of sticking to it, which is why they dominate the beach dress end of the range. Open crochet and loose knit stay cool because they are more hole than fabric, and for that same reason they do very little against sun.

The test is the walk back from the water. If it goes on over a suit that is still wet, choose the fabric that dries fast and keeps its distance from the body. If it goes on once you are dry, weight and handle matter more than drying time does.

Adding Coverage Without a Cover-Up

Sometimes the answer is a different suit rather than another garment, particularly if you dislike layers in heat.

Sleeved swimwear covers the arms permanently and cannot be forgotten on a lounger. A swim dress covers the hips and upper thighs in the same garment. Swim shorts do the same below the waist while staying swimmable, which no cover-up manages. The two approaches are not exclusive. Most people end up with one covered suit for swimming and one light layer for everything either side of it.
