Perfect. Exactly as I had hoped.

This suit is super cute, nice fit. I especially like that the top has a built in bra. love it!

Happy to find these long sleeved sets that give me the sun protection I need and still feel sexy.

A suit for lounging and a suit for swimming are different garments, and the difference is not branding. Once you are doing laps, aqua aerobics or paddling, three requirements become non-negotiable: the straps must stay on the shoulder through overhead movement, the leg opening must not ride up, and the fabric must recover its shape after every session rather than bagging out at the seat.
Nothing about that requires a specialist label. What it requires is a firmer underband, a strap layout designed for movement, and fabric with enough elastane content to spring back. A standard fashion suit fails on all three within a few weeks of regular use, which is why people who swim properly end up buying twice.
If you take one thing from this page, take this: strap layout matters more than every other feature combined. Standard shoulder straps run parallel down the back, which means any overhead movement — every freestyle stroke, every reach — pulls them outward and off the shoulder. You spend the session adjusting.
Racerback and cross-back layouts converge between the shoulder blades. The pulling force works against the crossing point instead of against the edge of your shoulder, so nothing slides. It is a small geometric difference with an enormous practical effect, and it is the single reason competitive swimwear has looked the way it has for fifty years.
For a fuller bust, add a firm band underneath. Underwire styles carry weight during activity in a way that a shelf bra alone cannot, and a wide band spreads the load rather than concentrating it in one line.
Compression means something different here than it does in shaping swimwear, and the two get confused constantly.
In a tummy control suit, compression is a cosmetic tool applied to the stomach, and its downside is comfort over a long day. In athletic swimwear, compression is applied across the torso and thighs to reduce muscle movement during repetitive activity — the same principle as a compression sleeve for running. It genuinely reduces fatigue over distance.
Which means the answer depends entirely on what you are doing. Swimming laps or training: compression helps. Wading, sunbathing, or a beach day where you are mostly dry: it is discomfort with no return. If you are buying one suit for both, prioritise the strap layout and skip the compression.
The word carries two meanings and this page has so far covered only one. Athletic also describes a build — broader through the shoulder, straighter through the waist, often smaller through the bust — and it asks different questions of a suit than lap swimming does.
Two things come up repeatedly. Shoulder width makes a standard strap set sit at the edge of the shoulder rather than on it, which is what causes straps to slide; a racerback or crossback moves the anchor points inward and removes the problem entirely. And a straighter waist means shaping panels have nothing to gather over, so ruching reads as loose fabric rather than as texture — a plain front usually looks cleaner.
Where volume rather than support is the objective, construction does more than padding thickness: a molded cup with a rounded profile builds shape on its own. See smaller bust styles.
A one piece has the structural advantage, because nothing can separate at the waist mid-stroke — see the full one piece range. Two-piece athletic sets have caught up considerably, though, and they solve the sizing problem that a one piece cannot: buying the top for your bust and the bottom for your hips.
For outdoor sessions, cover the shoulders. A rash guard handles both sun and board friction, and a long sleeve style does the same over a standard suit. For board sports specifically, board short sets use a longer, firmer cut that stops chafing where a brief seam would rub.
Whatever you choose, care determines lifespan more than construction does. Rinse in cold fresh water immediately after every session and dry flat out of direct sun — chlorine and heat destroy elastane far faster than swimming does.
