Are One-Piece Swimsuits Still in Style?

More than in twenty years, and for practical reasons rather than fashion ones. The torso is held as a single panel, so nothing shifts at the waist and nothing needs rearranging when you get out. For anyone who swims rather than sits, that settles it.

What changed is the design language. Once necklines opened up and cut-outs arrived, the shape stopped reading as the conservative choice and started reading as the considered one. A plunging one piece and a high-necked one share a construction and say entirely different things.

Do You Wear a Bra Underneath?

No — and you should not need to. Almost every ladies one piece swimwear style has support built into it already, whether that is a shelf bra sewn into the lining, molded cups, or full underwire.

A regular bra underneath causes three problems. It soaks through and stays wet long after the suit has dried, it shows at the neckline and armhole, and chlorine destroys bra elastic far faster than swim elastic — so you lose the bra rather than gain support.

If a suit does not give you enough support on its own, the answer is a different suit rather than an added layer. Our underwire styles are built for exactly this, with a firm underband that carries weight the way a bra band does.

If you want structure rather than a shelf bra, look for one piece swimwear with underwire bra construction — the wire and band do the work that straps cannot.

Where the Support Comes From

A one piece looks as though it should support itself, and the ones that do are built around a band rather than a lining. Weight sits on the underband; straps only stop the front falling forward.

Three constructions, in ascending order of how much they hold. A shelf lining is a soft internal layer with light elastic, fine to about a C cup. A molded cup keeps a fixed shape wet or dry, which is what stops the front collapsing. A wire adds a fixed perimeter under the bust and is the only one that reliably carries a fuller bust. Removable pads sit inside any of the three and change nothing structural.

Should You Size Up or Down?

Size up if you are between sizes. This is the opposite of the advice most people apply to swimwear generally, and it is where women's one piece swimwear goes wrong most often.

The reason is torso length. The distance between shoulder and crotch is fixed, and if it is too short the suit pulls down at the shoulder and up at the crotch at once — nothing to adjust, because the fabric is not long enough. Slightly generous is barely visible; slightly tight is unwearable within an hour.

If your torso runs long, prioritise adjustable straps over every other feature. They let you add length through the body without changing the width, and they are the single most useful detail available on this shape.

Choosing Your Cut

The shape has one proper name — a maillot — though almost nobody uses it. All one piece swimsuits share that base; the cut decides what they actually do. A ruched front smooths the middle — see our tummy control styles. A swim dress adds a skirt panel over the same base for hip and thigh coverage. Open backs and cut-outs keep the front coverage intact and open up everywhere else. For sun and watersports, a long sleeve style covers the shoulders and upper arms without changing the base construction at all.

Below the waist the cut varies as much as it does above, and it is the half most descriptions skip. A standard leg opening sits at the hip; a higher cut lifts the line and exposes more of the thigh; a lower, straighter one covers more and reads calmer. Seat coverage moves independently of that — full, moderate or cheeky — so a modest front can arrive with a brief back. Check both in the rear photograph rather than assuming they match.

One note on color: pale suits turn translucent when wet unless fully lined, which is worth confirming in the description. Darker solids hide sunscreen marks and hold their appearance longer through a season.
