Retailers have settled on a name for this pairing and it is worth knowing before you search: a shortini. It is a tankini top worn with a swim short instead of a brief, sold either as a matched set or as two halves you put together yourself. Listings also call it a tankini with swim shorts, a tankini sets with shorts, or simply a two piece with shorts, and all four describe the same garment.
Knowing the word helps because it is the term that separates this from a board short, which is a different construction entirely, and from a swim skirt, which covers the same area with a panel rather than two legs.
The tops that come with it are the same ones sold everywhere else in the range. Bandeau, halter, blouson and wired versions all pair with a short, and tankini sets that arrive with shorts have simply had that pairing made for you. Nothing about the bottom half restricts what goes above it.
The failure everyone remembers is the short that floats. Fabric traps air on the way in, the leg balloons, and the hem ends up somewhere around the hip until you push it back down. It is not a sizing problem and going down a size makes it worse, because a tighter leg traps the same air against less skin.
What fixes it is the finish at the leg opening. A band of elastic bonded or stitched inside the hem holds the leg against the thigh and lets the air out at the edge. A raw or rolled hem has nothing to hold it and will ride. Silicone along the inside of that band does the same job on a wetter, faster entry.
The second thing that helps is a fabric with some weight to it. A very light knit dries quickly and floats readily; a slightly heavier one stays down and takes an extra ten minutes on the line. For a day that involves diving in more than once, the heavier one wins.
Leg length is measured from the crotch seam down, and three positions cover almost everything on the rail. A boyshort stops at the top of the thigh and reads closest to a brief. A mid-length short reaches the middle of the thigh. A longer cut finishes just above the knee and behaves more like a pair of shorts you would wear over a suit.
Pick by what the thigh is doing rather than by how much you want covered. If the legs touch when you walk, a length that ends where they touch will roll up there; going longer or shorter both solve it and only one of them is comfortable in the sun. If you sit on hot decking or rock, longer keeps skin off the surface.
Searches for plus size tankini swimsuits with shorts land on this cut for a reason: it is the arrangement that covers the hip and the upper thigh without asking a single garment to fit two very different measurements.
At larger sizes the short does more work, and two details decide whether it is comfortable past the first hour. The rise has to reach the natural waist rather than sitting under the stomach, because a waistband that sits below the widest point rolls down all day. And the leg needs enough circumference that it is holding rather than gripping.
Plus size tankinis with shorts pair those bottoms with tops drafted at the same size, so the two halves meet where they were drawn to. Buying the halves apart works equally well — take the plus size tankini top by the bust and the short by the hip, and check the top clears the waistband by an inch or two before you order.
A high waisted short is the version to reach for if the rolling waistband is the recurring problem; it puts the elastic above the widest point rather than across it.
Shaping is worth a thought at the same time. A short with a wider, firmer waistband holds the lower stomach on its own, so pairing it with a tummy control top often duplicates work that is already being done. One or the other is usually enough, and choosing one leaves the afternoon more comfortable than choosing both.
The leg elastic is what gives out first on a short, sooner than the fabric and sooner than anything on the top half. It sits against skin, takes sunscreen directly, and gets stretched every time the short goes on. Rinsing in cold water the same day does more for it than anything else.
Because the halves wear at different rates, replacing the short on its own is normal rather than wasteful. A plain one will partner two or three tankini tops before it needs replacing itself.
