Hawaii swimwear gets judged by three conditions rather than by style, and all three are about the place rather than the trip.
Stronger sun here. Closer to the equator, and reflected back off water and pale sand from below as well as above. The upper back and shoulders go first, and nobody reliably reapplies sunscreen every single time they come out of the water. Fabric handles it instead — a rash guard or a long sleeve style covers the area that matters, and the sun protection range collects the cuts that cover most.
There is reef. Snorkelling means lying flat over coral and getting in and out over volcanic rock. Bare shoulders and hips against either one lose. Coverage here is practical rather than modest.
You stay wet. Beach days run in and out of the water rather than sunbathing between swims, so a suit that needs rearranging every time you stand up will be rearranged twenty times a day.
Worth checking before you pack rather than after you land: Hawaii restricts the sale of sunscreens containing certain ingredients, on reef protection grounds. The bottle in your bathroom at home may not be one you can replace once you arrive.
That changes what the swimsuit is doing. Somewhere you can top up freely, fabric is a convenience. Somewhere you might not be able to, it becomes the part you rely on — a suit covering the shoulders and upper back is worth more here than a spare bottle would be.
Read the ingredient list on what you already own before it goes into the case. Two minutes at home, and a real nuisance on the second morning otherwise.
Two suits minimum for a week, and three if you are swimming daily. This is about drying time rather than variety — elastane needs roughly a day to recover its shape, and a suit put back on damp every morning is loose by the end of the trip.
The most useful combination is two tops and one bottom rather than two complete sets. It costs about the same, gives more combinations, and the top is the half that varies most in how it looks. A tankini makes this easiest because the halves size independently.
Add one thing that covers the shoulders and one that covers the thigh, and the packing decision is essentially finished. Swim shorts do the second job and stay put in surf better than a skirt does.
One thing worth leaving room for: a suit still damp on the morning you fly home. A mesh or open-top bag keeps it draining rather than sitting sealed against everything else in the case — see wet bags.
Tropical and floral prints belong here more than anywhere, and they hold up better than solids in one specific way: a busy print hides the sunscreen marks that a plain suit shows within a day.
What they do not survive is neglect. Strong sun bleaches a bright print faster than chlorine ever does, and salt left in the fabric abrades it from the inside as it dries. Rinse in fresh water at the end of the day — most beaches and every hotel has an outdoor shower — and dry the suit flat in shade rather than over a hot railing.
Darker grounds hold their color longest across a trip. Where a single suit has to survive the whole week, a deep print or a black suit is the safer bet than anything pale.
A suit that stays put through surf is a different requirement from one that looks right on a lounger. Look for adjustable straps, a firm underband and a bottom with real rise — see high waisted cuts. Anything held on by a knot will need retying.
