Board Shorts or Swim Shorts?

Board shorts swimwear and swim shorts are built for different things, and the two names get used interchangeably almost everywhere. Worth settling before anything else.

Board shorts come from surfing. They run long — usually to the knee or past it — in a stiffer, abrasion-resistant fabric with a flat waistband and no elastic, so nothing digs in while you are lying on a board. Many have a mesh liner. They are made to survive being dragged across a hard surface, and they are heavy and slow to dry as a result.

Swim shorts are cut shorter, in a lighter stretch fabric with an elasticated or drawstring waist. They cover the upper thigh, move with you in water, and dry quickly.

What we make is the second one. If you are surfing regularly and want a proper long boardshort with a liner, that is a specialist purchase and this is not the range for it. If what you actually want is thigh coverage that you can swim in and then walk to lunch in, keep reading — that is what these are for.

Can You Actually Swim in Them?

Yes, and this is where the shorter cut earns its place.

Length is drag. A long board short holds water and pulls against every kick, which is why nobody swims laps in one. A shorter swim short in a stretch fabric sits close enough to the body that it barely registers, and it drains as you stand up rather than staying heavy.

The other question people ask is whether a pool will allow them, and the answer is usually about fabric rather than shape. Many public pools restrict anything made of cotton or with pockets, because loose fibres clog the filtration and pockets carry grit into the water. A purpose-made swim short in a synthetic stretch fabric meets those rules; a pair of cotton shorts does not, however similar they look.

Pockets are the other thing to check. A back pocket with a drain hole is useful; a lined pocket with no drainage fills, holds water and pulls the whole garment down every time you get out.

One practical note on fit: a drawstring matters more here than in any other swim garment. Shorts sit at the waist rather than being held by shoulder straps, so the waistband is the only thing keeping them in place when you jump in.

What Goes Underneath

Most board shorts arrive with a mesh liner sewn inside, and where there is one you do not need anything else. The description is where to check for it — look for liner or built-in brief. Where there is none, pair them with a bikini bottom rather than underwear — ordinary briefs are not made to be swum in, and the seams sit wrong once water is dragging at them.

One thing about the liner itself: it wears out before the shell does. Chlorine sits in the mesh openings longer than on a flat surface, so the elastic there goes first. Rinse with the liner pulled out flat rather than tucked inside.

As for pools — most set the rule by fabric rather than length, and swim fabric passes whichever way it is cut. A few judge by how loose the garment is, so a quick check with the venue beats an argument at the door.

What We Make Instead

Three ways to get thigh coverage, and they suit different days.

Swim shorts sets pair a short with a matching top, so the two arrive already resolved. A skirted bottom covers the same area but reads more like regular clothing once you are dry, though it moves more in water. Full coverage bottoms stay closest to the body if it is the seat rather than the thigh you want covered.

For the top half, a tankini is the usual partner because it sells separately and sizes independently, and a rash guard completes the outfit if you want sun coverage above the waist as well.
