A Wire Has to Land in Two Places

A wire in a bikini top has one job: to sit in the crease under the bust and stay there. The same wire in a one piece has to manage that while the garment around it is also being pulled from the shoulder and the crotch, and that second demand is what makes a wired one piece fit differently from a wired top.

The consequence is that two measurements decide the fit instead of one. Bust circumference sets the width of the wire. Torso length sets where the wire lands. Get the first right and the second wrong and the wire sits below the crease, across the ribs, which is where the ache comes from.

So the check is a vertical one before it is a horizontal one. Measure from the top of the shoulder, down through the body and back up to the same point, then compare that against the longest body the style is offered in. That casing then has to be anchored to a band carrying load right around the body. Most unwired one pieces have no band at all — the front panel does the work, spread thinly over the whole torso — and setting a rigid perimeter into the middle of that changes how the entire garment pulls.

The reverse is worth doing. A suit built with a channel will usually take a replacement wire if the original distorts, and that repair restores it completely. If what you want is more structure in a suit you already own, a firmer band and removable pads do part of the job. When the Wire Comes Through

Wires do eventually work their way out, and swim elastic gives them more opportunities than a bra does.

And the coating breaks down, which leaves the metal end rougher and accelerates the first two.

The tell is a change in feel rather than a visible fault: a spot under the arm that reads sharp through the fabric, or a wire that no longer springs back when you press its two ends together.

Caught early, a wire that has pushed through one end of its casing can be eased back and the end restitched. Caught late, the coating has gone and it will come through again somewhere else.
