Why a One Piece Is the Harder Pattern

A two piece has to get two circumferences right — around the bust and around the hip. Each half floats independently, and the gap at the waist absorbs any disagreement between them.

A one piece has to get those same two right and then a third thing as well: the vertical distance between them. Torso length varies more between people of the same dress size than almost any other measurement, and a suit drafted a centimeter short in the body pulls at the shoulder and rides at the leg no matter how well the widths were calculated.

This is why construction shows up faster in this shape than in any other. A carelessly drafted bikini is merely a bikini that does not fit especially well; a carelessly drafted one piece is uncomfortable within an hour, and everybody notices.

It is also why the suits worth paying attention to tend to state their body length somewhere, or offer a version cut longer. The long torso one piece range exists for exactly this reason, and reading it first is a fair way to work out whether length is your variable at all.

Where the Work Shows

The word designer is used loosely across swimwear, so the practical approach is to ignore it and look at four things that are visible in a good product photograph.

The lining. On a considered suit the lining is cut to the same pattern as the outer layer, so the two move together. On a rushed one it is a rectangle tacked in, which shows as a faint horizontal ridge across the front when the suit is stretched. Look at the front panel in a photograph taken on a body rather than flat.

The leg finish. A bound edge has a visible band of fabric folded over the opening. The alternative hides the elastic inside the fabric itself, which reads cleaner in a photograph and gives way earlier in use. Neither is wrong, and the listing rarely says which — the photograph does.

The strap angle. Straps set closer to the neck stay on more shoulders than straps set wide. On a well-drafted suit they meet the back at an angle rather than straight down, which is a detail you can see and a detail that costs more to make.

The fourth is the simplest: whether the same suit is offered in more than one body length. That single fact says more about how it was developed than any description will.

How to Style It

A structured one piece is the swim shape that carries the most weight out of the water, which is where most of its hours get spent.

Three combinations do nearly all of it. Wide linen trousers and an open shirt, which turns the suit into the top half of an outfit for the afternoon. A long skirt with the suit tucked under the waistband, which reads as a two-piece outfit from any distance. Or simply a shirt dress left unbuttoned, which is the version that needs no thought at all.

The one thing to settle before any of them is where the suit sits at the leg, because that is what decides whether it disappears under a waistband or shows at the top of it. A higher leg opening tucks away cleanly under a skirt; a lower one reads as a hem and wants to be seen rather than hidden.

What all three have in common is that the neckline and the shoulder line are the only parts on show, so those are the parts worth choosing carefully. A classic one piece shape gives the plainest version, a retro one piece the most structured, and the full range sits in one piece swimwear.
