In the Water, and What Changes

Swimming in one is straightforward at a pool and asks more of the fit in surf.

Two things happen once you are in. The fabric takes on water and gains weight, all of which now hangs from the top edge instead of from the shoulders. And overhead movement — a stroke, a dive, reaching for a ladder — lifts the ribcage and briefly loosens the band. Together they are why a suit that behaves standing on the deck can move on the third length.

The test is on dry land: raise both arms straight overhead and watch the top edge. An inch of travel dry becomes more than that wet. Gathered or twisted fabric across the front absorbs some of it, because gathering has length to give back; a smooth front has none to give. For a day spent mostly in the water rather than beside it, clip the straps on and take them off later.

Two details change the character of a strapless one piece more than any others: a skirt at the hip or cutouts at the waist.

A swimdress adds a skirt panel from the waist or hip that flares gently over the leg.
