Narrowing the Blue Range

Blue is the broadest category on this site after black, which makes it the one where scrolling works least well. Filtering by shape gets to an answer in a fraction of the time, and there are only three or four shapes doing most of the work.

Openings are the first. A cut out one piece removes fabric at the side waist, the front or the back, and each placement changes the suit's coverage differently. On a plain blue the opening is the design, so it is worth deciding whether you want one before anything else.

Straps are the second. A strapless one piece hands the whole job to the band around the chest, which suits a lounger better than a swim. Anything with a fixed strap is the other way round, and an adjustable strap sits between the two by letting you set the length once and leave it.

Hem and front finish close it out. A swim dress finishes in a skirt instead of a plain brief, and a ruched one piece gathers the front into folds. Two filters, applied in that order, will usually leave a page you can read in one pass.

Navy Where You Would Have Worn Black

A fair number of navy suits get bought for a specific reason that has nothing to do with swimming: they are the ones that go on at breakfast and come off at the end of the day.

A one piece is the only swim shape that manages that, because it is a single closed garment. Under wide trousers and an open shirt it stops registering as swimwear for a couple of hours at a time, which is what makes a navy one worth packing for a trip built around boats, ferries and long lunches rather than around a pool.

If that is the plan, the things to check sit at the edges. A neckline that holds its own line, straps that lie flat rather than rolling under a shirt, and a leg opening that stays put when you sit down for an hour — those three decide whether the suit survives the non-swimming half of the day.

Fabric weight matters here more than it does for a pure pool suit. A heavier knit keeps its shape through a day of sitting and standing, where a very light one starts to follow whatever it was last pressed against. The listing rarely states the weight outright, but a suit described as having a lined or double-layer body is usually the sturdier of two that otherwise look alike.

The more structured shapes handle all of this best. A classic one piece is the plain version of the idea, and the rest of the shapes are in one piece swimwear.

Blue on a Boat and on the Way Home

Boat days ask different things of a suit than pool days do, and blue is the color most often bought for them.

There is more sitting, on surfaces that are wet, hot or both, and less actual swimming than anyone plans for. That puts the weight on the seat of the suit and on the leg opening rather than on the bust, and it makes a fuller-cut leg more comfortable over several hours than a high one.

The journey home is the part that gets forgotten. A one piece worn under clothes for a travel afternoon needs to be dry enough not to mark them, and a mid to deep blue is forgiving about the marks a pale suit leaves while it gets there.

Pack it with that sequence in mind — swim, sit, travel — and the suit you choose will be a slightly different one from the suit you would choose for a week at a single pool.
