Two is enough for a week. Spring break swimwear gets put back on wet more often than not, and the limit is drying time rather than variety.
Elastane needs roughly a day to recover its shape after being stretched and soaked. Wearing the same suit two days running means putting on a damp one that has not sprung back, which is both unpleasant and the fastest way to wear it out. Two suits alternating will outlast one suit worn daily by considerably more than double.
Beyond two, extra suits are about variety rather than necessity — and there is a cheaper way to get that, covered below. With prices opening at $9.9, a spare suit costs less than most people assume.
The most efficient packing decision available, and it costs about the same as two matched sets.
Because tops and bottoms are sold separately across most of our range, two tops and one bottom gives you more combinations than two complete sets — and the top is the piece that changes how an outfit reads. A solid black or navy bottom pairs with almost any printed top, so one bottom carries the whole week.
It also solves the sizing problem in the same move: buy the top for your bust and the bottom for your hips rather than accepting a compromise. Browse tops and bottoms separately to build the set.
Three things beyond the suits, in order of how much use they get.
A cover-up is the highest-value item in a swim bag. One layer deals with shoulder sun, gives you something to sit on sand in, and gets you to lunch without a change of clothes — which means one suit covers considerably more situations than it would alone.
Something with sun coverage, if you are somewhere with real sun and you burn. Sleeved styles and long sleeve suits cover the shoulders permanently, which sunscreen does only until the next swim.
And swim shorts, which are the most versatile bottom you can pack — they cover the upper thigh, protect against hot sand and rough surfaces, and read as ordinary shorts once dry.
One thing worth deciding before you pack rather than after: whether you need a suit you can swim properly in as well as sit in. If the trip involves actual swimming, a one piece or a racerback style stays put in a way a tie-fastened bikini does not.
Wear it once at home first. A suit tried on in a bedroom and a suit worn for three hours behave differently — straps that seemed fine start to slide, a leg opening that looked right starts to cut. Finding that out on day one is how one suit ends up doing a whole week badly.
And think about where things will dry. Shared accommodation has one rail or none, and a suit going back on damp every morning loses shape faster than a season at home. If there is nowhere to hang anything, that is an argument for a third suit rather than a better one, and for a wet bag so the damp one is not against everything else.
Chlorine, salt, sunscreen and sun all break down swim elastic faster than actually wearing it does, and a week of holiday concentrates all four.
Rinse in cool fresh water at the end of every day, before anything dries into the fabric — a hotel bathroom sink is enough. Never wring a suit out; press the water out between a towel instead, because twisting distorts the elastic permanently. Lay it flat rather than hanging it, since a wet suit on a hanger stretches its own straps under the weight of the water it holds. And keep it out of direct sun while drying, which is where most color loss actually happens rather than in the water.
Done consistently, both suits come home in the state they left in. Skipped for a week, they will not.
