Swimwear falls into a few basic cuts, and the cut you pick decides how much of your midsection is covered. Start there, then narrow by support and waistline.
Tankinis pair a tank-style top with separate bottoms. You get the torso coverage of a one-piece but can size the top and bottom differently, and you don't have to undress completely to use a restroom. This is our largest category, and it includes blouson tops that skim the waist instead of hugging it.
One-piece swimwear connects top and bottom into a single piece. It stays put best when you actually swim, and it is the simplest style to pull on.
Swimdresses add a short skirted overlay to a built-in swimsuit, covering the hips and upper thighs while the lined bottoms underneath stay in place in the water.
Bikinis leave the midriff open and come with mid-waisted or high-waisted bottoms. Ours are cut for moderate to full rear coverage rather than cheeky.
Separates let you buy a swim top or a swim bottom on its own, in shorts, skirt or board short lengths.
Tummy control swimwear, also listed as tummy coverage, uses one of three constructions, and they feel completely different to wear. Knowing which is which saves you a return.
Ruching means the front fabric is gathered into soft folds. It adds no compression at all, so it feels the same as ordinary swimwear, and the folds break up the outline rather than flattening it.
A lined front panel adds a second layer of fabric across the stomach. This one holds firmly and gives the smoothest line, but it feels snug and takes longer to dry.
A blouson cut hangs loose from the bust and never touches the waist, which is the most forgiving option if you dislike anything tight around your middle.
Colour and print matter too. Dark solids and vertical stripes read narrower than horizontal stripes, and a busy all-over print hides more than a large single motif.
Work through three decisions in order and most styles rule themselves out.
First, bust support. Underwire and built-in shelf bras hold a fuller bust in place; adjustable straps and removable pads let you fine-tune everything else. Scoop and high necklines cover more chest, while V-necks, surplice wraps and bandeau tops show more.
Second, waistline. Mid-waisted bottoms sit just above the hipbone. High-waisted bottoms come up to the natural waist and cover the whole stomach, which is why they pair well with a shorter tankini top.
Third, leg coverage. Swim shorts and skirted bottoms cover the upper thigh; standard briefs do not. If you want the most coverage overall, a swimdress or a tummy control one-piece gets you there in a single piece.
Sizes run XS through 6XL, and the range applies across tankinis, one-pieces, bikinis and separates rather than being limited to a small separate line. Because most sets are sold as separates, size the top to your bust and the bottom to your hips instead of forcing one number to work for both. Selected styles are marked Flexible Sizing, meaning the fabric and ties accommodate more than one size. Check the size chart on each product page, since fit varies by cut.
Tops and bottoms are priced and sold individually in most of our range, so a set is something you assemble. That solves two common problems: buying two sizes in one set, and replacing only the half that wore out. It also means one bottom can carry several tops across a season. Solid black and navy bottoms pair with almost any printed top, which is the cheapest way to get more looks from fewer pieces.
Swimwear elastic is broken down by chlorine, salt and sunscreen far more than by wear, so most suits die of neglect rather than use.
Want the most coverage in one piece? Choose a swimdress or a tummy control one-piece. Need two different sizes? A tankini or separates. Replacing just one half? Shop swim tops and swim bottoms individually. Add a cover-up for the walk to and from the water.
