Buying a Swim Top on Its Own

Tops are priced and sold individually across most of our range, and there are two good reasons people shop this way rather than buying sets.

The first is replacement. Swimwear rarely wears out evenly — the top loses its elastic before the bottom does, because it carries weight and gets stretched every time you put it on. Buying one top instead of a whole set costs roughly half and solves the actual problem.

The second is building a set that fits. Very few people are the same size above and below the waist, and a matched set forces you to accept a compromise at one end. Two tops with one bottom also produces more combinations than two complete sets at similar cost, since the top is the piece that changes how an outfit reads.

The Top Shapes, and What Each Supports

Five shapes cover almost everything, and they differ mainly in where the support comes from.

  • Bandeau — a straight band with no straps. Support comes entirely from the band, so it needs to be firm. Best on smaller busts, and worth checking whether removable straps are included.
  • Halter — ties or fastens behind the neck. The diagonal line lifts and narrows the shoulder visually; the trade-off is that the neck carries weight.
  • Bralette — cut like a soft bra, usually unlined or lightly lined. Comfortable, minimal structure.
  • Tankini top — longer through the body, covering the waist. The most covered option — see the full tankini range.
  • Swim crop — sits between a bralette and a tankini, ending just under the ribs. Popular for activity.

Swimwear textiles matter more in a top than anywhere else — a lined, higher-elastane fabric holds a cup shape that a thin single layer will not.

Swim Top, Bikini Top or Swim Shirt?

Three terms, three different garments, and the line between them is structure rather than size.

A bikini top is defined by its cups. Whatever the strap arrangement above them, the support comes from the band and the cup, and there is no fabric below the ribcage. It is the narrowest of the three terms.

A swim top is the wider one. It takes in every bikini top plus everything that continues further down the body — crops, longer bandeau shapes, tankini tops reaching the hip. What all of them share is a built-in bust, and that is exactly what separates them from the third category.

A swim shirt has no cups at all. It is a shirt made in swim fabric, pulled on over a suit, sized like clothing rather than like a bra. Are swim shirts a thing? They are, and they are the right answer when you want arm and shoulder cover without a second layer of structure across the bust — but on their own they support nothing.

The practical consequence is what each one can be worn alone with. A bikini top and a swim top both stand by themselves. A swim shirt needs something under it, which makes it an addition to a set rather than a piece of one.

If You Need Real Support

Above roughly a D cup the shape matters less than the construction, and two features do the work.

A wide, firm underband carries the weight — not the straps. A top creeping up your back by mid-afternoon means the band is slack — and taking the whole top up a size loosens it further. And underwire lifts from below while holding inward at the sides, which is the one thing padding cannot do at larger cup sizes. A halter or a tankini top with a wire is considerably more comfortable than an unwired bandeau supporting the same bust.

For sizes 1X and above, our plus size tankini tops carry the same cup construction rather than a simplified version.

One thing worth checking in the description: whether the cups are molded or simply padded. Molded cups hold their shape wet and dry; loose foam inserts compress and wrinkle in water, which shows most on a lighter color.

Sleeves and Coverage

Sleeves change what a top is for. Short and cap sleeves cover the shoulder cap, which is the first place to burn. Long sleeve tops cover the arms entirely and handle both sun and board friction — the original reason rash guards exist.

Above the waist, neckline decides chest coverage: high necks sit closest to the collarbone and hold position when you lean forward, while scoops and square necks cover well with a softer line. Pair any of these with whichever bottom you already own — that is the point of buying separately.
