Post pregnancy swimwear is usually bought before the answer to this is settled, so it is worth taking first. The honest answer is that it depends on the birth and on your own recovery, and it is a question for your midwife or doctor rather than for a shop. The general guidance is to wait until bleeding has stopped and any stitches have healed, which for many people means several weeks, and longer after a caesarean.
Worth planning for either way: buy for the body you have on the day rather than the one you expect in three months. A suit that nearly fits now and might fit later tends to get worn neither time.
Three things, and none of them are about hiding.
A soft front. The middle stays sensitive for a long time, and compression is uncomfortable there rather than helpful. A gathered or wrapped front smooths the line by breaking up the surface, not by pressing on it — a surplice cut does this particularly well, since the fabric crosses over rather than pulling flat across. Our tummy control styles are built this way throughout.
Adjustability. Sizes can shift from one week to the next in this period. A drawstring waist or an adjustable strap lets one suit follow that, where a fixed cut has one moment where it works.
Real support. Bust size changes more than anything else after a birth, and thin elastic simply will not cope with it. Weight has to be carried by a wide firm band rather than by the straps, and that is a construction difference you can see in the photograph — see underwire styles for the version that holds its shape wet.
The size you are in the morning may not be the size you are by the afternoon, and that changes what to look for more than anything else on this page.
A rigid molded cup is the worst fit for a moving target — it holds one shape and nothing else. A softer cup with real strap adjustment tracks the change instead of fighting it. And access matters as much as fit: a top that pulls down or unties one-handed is worth a great deal more than a pull-on one-piece when you are holding a baby with the other arm. Wrap fronts, ties and tankini tops all manage it; a high racerback does not.
On underwire, the common advice at this stage is to leave it off for a while, on the grounds that pressure in the wrong place can cause problems. Whether that applies to you is a question for your midwife or doctor rather than for a product page.
Every other consideration is a preference; this one is logistics. The practical case for separates is stronger here than at any other time. Getting a damp one-piece off in a changing room while holding a baby is its own argument, and a two-piece halves the problem.
Beyond that, it lets you buy two sizes — one for the top, one for the bottom — which is close to essential when those two are changing at different rates. Buying a single size for both is what forces the compromise, and at this stage the compromise usually lands on the half that was already uncomfortable.
A tankini gives you one-piece coverage with two-piece sizing, and a longer top over a high-waisted bottom covers the middle just as completely as a one-piece does.
For the upper thigh, swimwear that can be worn as shorts covers the area outright and pairs with any top in the range. It stays put in water better than a skirt, and out of the water it reads closely enough to regular clothing that you can walk somewhere in it. See swim shorts sets, or the full two-piece range if you want to build the combination yourself.
