Color is what everyone reaches for first, and in gender neutral swimwear it is the part that matters least. What actually decides whether a swim garment reads as neutral is its shape, and four features carry most of that.
Any of these can be found separately across ordinary swimwear ranges. Finding all four in one garment is what specialist labels exist for, and it is worth saying plainly that a suit ticking two of the four is not the same purchase.
Straight answer, because it saves time: everything here is cut and sized as women's swimwear. If you want a purpose-made unisuit or a swim tank drafted without a gendered block, a specialist label is the better place to look.
What this catalogue does have is the individual features above, spread across styles that were designed for other reasons. Separates make that usable — tops and bottoms sell independently, so a top from one place and a bottom from another can get closer to what you want than any single set would.
Sizing is the other half of the question and it is worth being equally direct about. Women's sizing is drafted around a bust-to-waist-to-hip ratio, so a straighter frame often finds the waist generous and the chest tight in the same garment. Buying the two halves separately is the practical way around that, and it is why separates matter more here than the specific style does.
Four routes, roughly in order of how neutral the shape reads.
A rash guard is the closest single garment. It has a straight body, a high neckline, no bust structure and a length that covers the hip, and it was built for sun and abrasion rather than for shape.
Swim shorts give a real inseam and an elasticated or drawstring waist, which is the neutral alternative to a brief. Pair them with the rash guard and the two together cover most of what the four features describe.
Long sleeve styles and the athletic range use higher necklines and straighter cuts than the rest of the catalogue, with less emphasis on shaping through the body.
Among tops, an unpadded style with a straight hem sits flattest — the swim tops range lists them separately so the construction is visible before ordering.
A size label describes a pattern rather than a person. What makes something a women's cut is a set of assumptions built into the block: a larger difference between bust and waist, a narrower shoulder, a longer run from shoulder to crotch.
Which makes fit a question of measurements instead of categories. Four numbers settle it — bust, underbust, waist, and the shoulder-to-crotch length taken over the body — and holding those against a size chart tells you a great deal more than the word on the label.
Where the bust-to-waist difference is small and the shoulders are broad, expect to go up a size or two before the shoulders sit properly, and expect the bust to be roomy once they do. That is not the garment being wrong for you. It is the block's assumptions not matching your proportions, which is information rather than a verdict.
Three words decide it more reliably than any category name. Molded or padded means a shaped bust panel. Shirred or ruched means gathering designed to follow a waist. Removable pads means the structure comes out, which turns a shaped top into a flat one — the most useful phrase on this list, and easy to miss.
