A fitted T-shirt is cut to follow the natural lines of the body more closely than a regular tee. The side seams curve in slightly at the waist, the sleeves sit closer to the arm and the body has less spare fabric, so the shirt outlines your shape rather than hanging straight down from the shoulders.
Fitted does not mean tight. A well-cut fitted tee should skim the body with a little ease, so it moves when you move and does not pull across the bust or stretch at the seams. If you can see strain lines radiating from the bust or the shirt rides up when you reach, it is too small rather than fitted.
What is a fitted t-shirt called? Retailers use several names for similar cuts, including tailored fit, slim fit, body fit and, for women, sometimes simply the classic women's cut. Fitted tees are often made with a little spandex or elastane in the fabric so they hold their shape and recover after stretching.
The appeal is polish. Because a fitted tee has no loose fabric, it tucks smoothly into trousers and skirts, sits flat under jackets and looks neat in photographs. It is the closest a T-shirt comes to looking tailored, which is why many women reach for fitted tees for work and dinners out.
Fitted tees also layer well. Under an open cardigan, a denim jacket or a long vest, they keep the outline clean so the outer layer does all the talking.
Is fitted tighter than slim? The terms overlap, but in general slim fit sits a step closer to the body than fitted. A slim fit tee is narrower through the chest and waist and often has shorter sleeves, while a fitted tee follows your shape with a little more room. Both are closer than a regular or classic fit.
Slim fit tee shirts suit slender frames and outfits where a very clean line matters, such as tucked into high-waisted trousers. On curvier figures, a fitted cut with a touch more ease usually looks smoother and feels more comfortable across the bust and hips.
Muscle fit t shirts come from menswear. They are cut close through the chest and arms with short, snug sleeves, designed to show the shoulders and upper arms. Some women like them for a sporty look, but most prefer a fitted cut with a slightly longer, softer sleeve.
Tight tee shirts are a different thing again: they are meant to cling, often in stretchy ribbed fabric. They suit layering under jackets or wearing with high-waisted skirts, but they show every line underneath, so a smooth bra matters.
When comparing fitted tees across brands, ignore the name and read the measurements. Chest, waist and length tell you more than any label.
The most flattering t shirt women can own is one that fits at the shoulders first. Shoulder seams should sit on the edge of the shoulder bone, not creep up toward the neck or droop down the arm. If the shoulders are right, the rest of the shirt usually falls well.
Next, check the bust and waist. There should be no pulling across the chest and no gaping between the arms. The fabric should skim the waist without clinging to the stomach; a subtle curve in the side seams helps, and a small amount of stretch keeps the shirt smooth.
Length matters more than people think. A fitted tee that ends just below the hip bone flatters most figures, tucks easily and stays put when you sit. Very short fitted tees can make the torso look boxy; very long ones can bunch at the hips.
Sleeves finish the picture. A sleeve that ends mid upper arm or a little lower looks polished and balances the shoulders. Very short sleeves emphasize the arms, which some women like and others prefer to avoid.
Fabric is the last piece. A mid-weight jersey with a little spandex lies smoothly and recovers its shape, while very thin fabric clings and shows lines. Fitted tees look best in solid colors or small prints, since large patterns distort as the fabric follows the body.
For a darker version, see black fitted T-shirts; for prints, fitted graphic tees. If you prefer more room, loose fit T-shirts are the opposite approach, and crew neck T-shirts and V-neck graphic tees show how neckline changes a fitted shape. Fitted tees also pair naturally with longer-length T-shirts for layering.
