What is a loose fit t-shirt called? Retailers use several names for roomier cuts, and they are not quite the same. A relaxed fit tee has a little extra ease through the body and sleeves but keeps the shoulder seam near the shoulder. It looks easy and casual without looking big, which makes it the most wearable loose shape for everyday outfits.
A loose fit sits a step further. The body hangs away from the torso, the sleeves are wider and the shoulder seam may drop slightly down the arm. The shirt skims the body rather than following it, which many women find comfortable and forgiving through the middle.
An oversized tee is deliberately too big. The shoulder seam drops well down the arm, the body is wide and often long, and the look relies on the contrast between a big top and slimmer bottoms. Boxy tees are a variation: wide and square, usually shorter in length.
Loose tee shirts in a soft, drapey fabric look more polished than those in stiff, heavy cotton, because the fabric falls in folds rather than standing away from the body. For everyday wear, a relaxed or loose fit in a mid-weight jersey is the easiest place to start.
Check the product measurements rather than the name. A shirt listed as relaxed in one shop may be as roomy as an oversized style in another, so chest width and body length are the best guides.
Almost any body type can wear a loose or oversized tee; the difference is in how it is styled. Petite frames look best in relaxed rather than truly oversized cuts, since very large tees can overwhelm a small frame. A half tuck or a slightly shorter length keeps the proportions balanced.
Tall and slender figures carry oversized tees easily, and they can wear longer, wider styles without looking swamped. Pairing them with slim trousers or leggings keeps the silhouette clean.
Curvier and fuller figures often find a relaxed fit the most comfortable and flattering, because the fabric skims rather than clings. The key is choosing a soft, drapey fabric and defining the waist somewhere, whether with a half tuck, a belt or a fitted bottom. A very stiff, boxy tee can add bulk where you may not want it.
For those with a fuller bust, a loose fit with a V or scoop neckline helps the shirt fall from the bust without tenting. A dropped shoulder can also balance broad shoulders by softening the line.
Whatever your shape, the rule is balance: a loose top wants a slimmer bottom, and a wide bottom wants a slightly closer top.
The half tuck is the simplest trick. Tuck just the front of the shirt into your waistband and let the back hang loose. It defines the waist, shows the shape of your trousers and makes a relaxed tee look deliberate rather than sloppy.
Pair loose tees with slim or straight bottoms. Skinny jeans, straight-leg trousers, leggings and pencil skirts all balance the volume on top. Wide-leg trousers can work too, but a full tuck or a shorter tee keeps the outfit from looking shapeless.
Roll or push up the sleeves to show the wrists, which adds definition. A long necklace, a belt or a structured jacket adds shape as well.
Shoes help balance the proportions too: a slim ankle boot, a pointed flat or a low sneaker keeps the outfit from looking heavy at the bottom.
For a closer shape, compare fitted T-shirts; for longer cuts that cover the hips, longer-length T-shirts; for relaxed everyday styles, casual T-shirts; and for more basics, plain T-shirts.
