Crew Neck T-Shirts

What's the Difference Between a T-Shirt and a Crew Neck?

The two terms overlap more than they differ. A crew neck is a type of neckline: round, close-fitting and sitting at the base of the neck, finished with a ribbed band. A T-shirt is a type of garment. Most T-shirts have crew necks, which is why the two words are often used as if they mean the same thing.

The confusion comes from sweaters and sweatshirts. A crew neck sweater or sweatshirt has the same round neckline, and in some shops "crewneck" on its own means a sweatshirt rather than a tee. A crew neck T-shirt is simply a tee with that round neckline.

Other T-shirts have different necklines: V-necks, scoop necks, boat necks and high or mock necks. Each changes the look and suits different face shapes and outfits.

The crew is the classic because it is the easiest to wear. It looks neat on its own, layers under almost anything and suits most occasions from errands to casual offices.

A good crew neck has a band that lies flat and springs back when stretched; a wavy or stretched-out neckband is the first sign of a tee that will not last.

Neckband width varies too. A narrow band looks refined and feminine; a wider band looks sporty and casual. A band with a little spandex keeps its shape wash after wash, which is worth checking on a tee you plan to wear often.

V-Neck or Crew Neck: Which Is More Flattering?

Neither is better for everyone; they flatter in different ways. A V-neck creates a vertical line that lengthens the neck and torso, which is why many people find it slimming. It also frames the collarbones and suits women with a fuller bust, shorter neck or rounder face.

A crew neck creates a horizontal line at the base of the neck. It suits women with a longer neck, narrower shoulders or a slender frame, and it balances wide hips by adding visual width at the top. It also looks tidier under jackets and is the more modest option.

What neckline makes you look slimmer? A V or a scoop, because both draw the eye down and in. A high crew can make a full bust look larger, since the fabric runs straight across it. A slightly lower crew or a softened scoop is a good compromise.

Many women keep both: crews for layering and casual wear, V-necks for dressing up and wearing with pendants. For the V-neck side, see V-neck graphic tees.

Who looks good in a crew neck? Almost everyone can wear one, but it is especially flattering on women with sloping or narrow shoulders, since the horizontal line adds a little width at the top. It also suits oval and heart-shaped faces, and it pairs beautifully with short necklaces that sit just above the neckband.

Jewelry can change the effect of any crew. A longer pendant creates a vertical line down the front, borrowing some of the lengthening effect of a V-neck while keeping the modest coverage of a crew.

Should You Size Up in a Crew Neck?

Usually not. A crew neck tee is designed to fit at your regular size, and sizing up simply makes the whole shirt bigger, including the shoulders and neckline. The shoulder seams drop down the arm and the neckline can gape.

Size up only if the tee is cut narrow or you want a deliberately relaxed look. If the neckline feels tight, look for a crew described as relaxed or wide rather than choosing a larger size.

Check the chest and length measurements too. A crew that fits at the shoulders but pulls across the bust suits a loose fit style better. For a closer cut, try fitted T-shirts; for basics in every color, plain T-shirts; and for layering, longer-length T-shirts.

Once you find a crew neck that fits at the shoulders and neckline, owning it in several colors is the simplest wardrobe shortcut there is.
