The best t-shirt for hot weather does three things: it lets air move, it handles sweat and it keeps the sun off your skin. Fabric, weight, fit and color all play a part, and getting them right makes a noticeable difference on a hot day.
Fabric comes first. Cotton breathes well and absorbs moisture, which makes it comfortable in dry heat. Cooler still are linen and cotton-linen blends, whose loose weave lets air through. In humid heat, lightweight blends with a little polyester or modal dry faster than pure cotton and feel less clammy.
Weight matters next. A lightweight jersey feels airy and cool, while a heavy tee traps heat. Look for fabrics described as light or airy in the description, but check that they are not so thin that they turn sheer.
Fit makes a big difference. A relaxed fit lets air circulate between the fabric and the body, so it feels much cooler than a tight tee. Loose sleeves and a slightly longer hem also help air move.
Color affects temperature too. Light colors such as white, pastels and soft neutrals reflect sunlight and feel cooler than dark colors, which absorb heat. Dark colors hide sweat marks better, though, so many people choose mid tones for busy summer days.
Neckline plays a small role. A V or scoop neck lets heat escape more easily than a close crew, which is why open necklines feel more comfortable in summer.
Think about sun as well as heat. A light-colored tee with a close weave blocks more sunlight than a sheer or very open knit, and a sleeve that reaches the elbow protects the shoulders and upper arms, which burn easily. For long days outdoors, that coverage matters as much as coolness.
Care keeps summer tees fresh. Wash them after each wear in hot weather, since sweat and sunscreen can yellow light fabrics, and dry them in shade so bright colors do not fade.
Many women want to stay cool without baring their arms, and summer shirts to hide arms are among the most searched summer styles. The good news is that coverage and comfort can go together with the right sleeve.
Elbow and half sleeves cover the upper arm while staying cool, especially in light, loose fabrics. Flutter and bell sleeves drape softly over the arm and let air move underneath, which feels lighter than a fitted sleeve. Dolman sleeves, cut wide at the armhole, offer coverage with plenty of room.
Fabric matters here too. A light, drapey knit falls away from the arm rather than clinging, which looks smoother and feels cooler. Avoid stiff or tight sleeves, which can feel hot and emphasize the arm.
A light cardigan or open shirt over a short sleeve tee is another option, easy to remove when you want more air. For sleeve options in more detail, see half sleeve T-shirts.
The same principles help with the midsection. A relaxed tee with a slightly longer hem skims rather than clings, and a soft drape looks smooth even when the fabric is light.
Color can help with coverage too. A mid-tone tee, such as dusty blue or sage, shows less of what is underneath than pure white, and it hides sweat marks better on hot days.
Summer invites color. Soft pastels such as blush, mint, lemon and sky blue feel fresh and cool, while bright shades such as coral, turquoise and sunny yellow suit beach days and holidays. White and cream are the classic summer neutrals.
Prints add a relaxed, holiday feel. Florals are the most popular summer print, from small ditsy patterns to larger tropical blooms. Stripes feel nautical and crisp, especially in blue and white.
When choosing a print for summer, lighter backgrounds look cooler and fresher. A floral on white or pastel feels breezier than the same print on black or navy.
Summer is also the season for easy dressing. A few relaxed tees in light colors, a pair of denim shorts, a linen skirt and cropped trousers cover most warm-weather plans, from errands to holidays.
For printed summer styles, see summer graphic tees; for short sleeves, short sleeve T-shirts; for breathable fabrics, cotton T-shirts; and for the freshest colors, white T-shirts and light blue graphic tees.
