What is a short sleeve T-shirt called? Most people simply say T-shirt, since short sleeves are the default. But the way the sleeve is attached has names of its own, and it changes how the shirt fits, looks and moves. Knowing the three main types helps you choose the most flattering short sleeve tee.
A set-in sleeve is the classic construction. The sleeve is sewn into a round armhole at the shoulder, so the seam sits at the edge of the shoulder bone. It gives a neat, structured shoulder line and is the most common cut for women's tees.
A cap sleeve is very short, covering only the top of the shoulder and the very top of the arm. It looks light and feminine and suits warm weather, but it shows more of the upper arm. Some cap sleeves are cut in one piece with the body of the shirt rather than sewn in.
A raglan sleeve runs in one piece from the collar to the underarm, with a diagonal seam across the shoulder. It feels roomy and easy to move in, suits broad shoulders, and often comes in a contrasting color, a style associated with baseball tees.
Dolman and dropped sleeves are relaxed variations. A dolman sleeve is cut wide at the armhole and narrows toward the wrist; a dropped sleeve starts below the shoulder. Both suit loose, casual tees.
Short tee shirts with set-in sleeves are the easiest place to start.
Sleeve width matters as much as type. A sleeve that sits close to the arm looks neat and tailored; a slightly wider one feels cooler and looks relaxed. If you prefer to cover the upper arm, look for a set-in sleeve that ends a little lower, closer to the middle of the arm, rather than a short cap.
What's the difference between a T-shirt and a short-sleeve shirt? The key is fabric and construction. A T-shirt is made from knit fabric, usually jersey, which stretches and pulls on over the head. A short-sleeve shirt is usually made from woven fabric, such as cotton poplin or linen, and fastens with buttons.
That difference changes how each one wears. Knit tees feel soft, drape easily and move with the body, which makes them comfortable for everyday wear. Woven shirts hold a crisper shape, wrinkle more and look a little smarter, especially with a collar.
Some styles blur the line. Henley tees add a short button placket to a knit shirt, and polo shirts combine a knit body with a collar. A shirt short sleeve t shirts shoppers find in the same section of a store may include all three, so the fabric description is the quickest guide.
For warm-weather comfort, knit short sleeve tees usually win. For a more formal look, a woven short-sleeve shirt or a smart knit tee under a blazer works better.
Care differs too. Knit tees can usually go straight from the washer to a hanger without ironing, while woven shirts often need pressing to look their best. For travel and busy weeks, a knit tee is the lower-maintenance choice.
Are short sleeve shirts acceptable for work? In most casual and business casual offices, yes, provided the tee looks polished. Choose a smooth, mid-weight knit that does not cling, a neckline that sits neatly, and a sleeve that ends around the middle of the upper arm rather than a very short cap.
Solid colors and small prints look most professional. Navy, black, cream and soft pastels are easy to style with trousers and skirts. A short sleeve tee under a blazer or long cardigan looks smart enough for meetings.
Fit matters too. A tee that is slightly fitted through the body and tucked into high-waisted trousers looks tidier than a loose, untucked one. For more on dressing a tee up, see business T-shirts.
Finish with simple jewelry and closed shoes, and a short sleeve tee becomes a practical, comfortable work top for warm days.
A light cardigan or blazer kept at your desk covers the arms when meetings call for it, so one tee can move from a warm commute to an air-conditioned office without a change.
For more options, browse crew neck T-shirts and half sleeve T-shirts; for warm-weather fabrics and arm coverage, summer T-shirts; and for basics, plain T-shirts. A short sleeve tee in a soft T-shirt fabric is one of the most comfortable things to wear on a hot day.
