To wear tie-dye in a grown-up way, pair it with simple, solid pieces. A tie-dye tee with white jeans, a denim jacket or a linen skirt looks fresh and relaxed. Keep accessories minimal so the pattern leads.

How to Keep Tie-Dye Vibrant

Tie-dye colors can fade or bleed if washed carelessly, especially in the first few washes. Wash a new tie-dye tee on its own or with similar colors in cold water for the first few washes, since some excess dye may still rinse out.

Should I use vinegar when washing tie-dye shirts for the first time? Many people add a cup of white vinegar to the first rinse to help set the color, though its effect varies by dye type. Adding a color-catcher sheet also protects other clothes from any loose dye.

Use a gentle detergent without bleach, and turn the tee inside out to reduce friction. Dry it flat or on a hanger in the shade; strong sunlight and high dryer heat both fade bright colors.

Avoid washing tie-dye with whites, especially in the first few washes, and never use chlorine bleach. If a little dye bleeds onto the white parts of the pattern, a cold soak with an oxygen cleaner usually lifts it.

Detergent choice helps too. A detergent made for colors, or one without optical brighteners, keeps tie-dye shades truer over time.

Ironing is rarely needed, but if it is, use a low setting on the reverse side.
