What Makes a Blouse Good for Winter?

A good winter blouse starts with weight. A slightly denser fabric holds warmth, feels smoother under knitwear and stays opaque in any light. Brushed cotton, soft flannel and heavier crepe all work well, while thin summer voile is better saved for warmer months.

Long sleeves are the norm, ideally with a cuff that fits closely enough to keep drafts out. Closing the neckline a little higher keeps the chest warm too, and a collar can be turned up against a cold wind.

Color matters as well. Deep, warm shades such as navy, wine, forest green, black and chocolate feel right for the season and look good against wool and tweed. Plaids and small prints on a dark ground add interest without looking summery.

Think about indoor heating too. Offices and homes can be very warm in winter, so a blouse that looks good on its own lets you take off the sweater when the room heats up.

Fit changes a little in winter as well. Winter blouses need some room across the back and the upper arm for a sweater or jacket on top, so a blouse that feels just right on its own in July may feel tight under a cardigan in January.
