Types of Floral Print

Flower blouses come in many prints, and each has its own name and mood. Ditsy prints use tiny flowers scattered close together. From a distance they read almost as texture, which makes them easy to wear every day and simple to pair with solids.

Calico is a small, simple floral printed on cotton, often in two or three colors, with a homey, country feel. Chintz is fuller and more decorative, with larger roses, peonies and leaves in rich colors; it was originally printed on glazed cotton and is linked with English country houses.

Watercolor florals have soft edges and blended colors that look painted by hand, and they suit floaty fabrics. Botanical prints show flowers and leaves drawn in detail, like illustrations from an old plant book, and feel calm and refined. Rose prints, from tiny rosebuds to large cabbage roses, are among the most loved florals of all. Small rosebuds feel sweet and old-fashioned, while big, open roses look lush and romantic.

Floral Blouse With Jeans or a Skirt

Jeans are the easiest partner for a floral blouse, because denim blue behaves like a neutral. Light-wash jeans look fresh with pastel florals, while dark indigo gives brighter prints a polished edge. White jeans are a spring and summer favorite with almost any floral.

With a skirt, a solid color taken from the print keeps the outfit calm. A navy pencil skirt under a navy-and-pink floral looks smart, and a pleated skirt in blush or sage creates a softer mood. Vintage Floral Blouses

Floral prints have a long history in women's blouses. From the 1920s into the 1950s, cotton flour and feed sacks were printed with small florals so families could reuse the fabric, and dresses and blouses sewn from sack cloth became a symbol of thrift. Those small, cheerful prints still define the vintage look.

The 1970s brought larger, more colorful florals, often on flowing blouses with big collars and full sleeves. Today's vintage-inspired floral blouses borrow from both eras: Peter Pan collars, puff sleeves and small prints from the forties, bigger blooms and relaxed shapes from the seventies.

In the 1940s, floral blouses were often cut with neat shoulders and small collars and worn tucked into high-waisted skirts. The same look pairs beautifully with a short cardigan today.
