Boho or Bohemian: Is There a Difference?

Boho is simply the short form of bohemian. The longer word first described the artists and writers of nineteenth-century Paris who lived outside convention, and it was borrowed from the French name for traveling Romani people, who were thought to have come from Bohemia.

In fashion, the two words now describe the same clothes. A bohemian blouse and a boho blouse are the same garment: a loose shape, a natural-looking fabric, plenty of pattern and handmade details such as embroidery, crochet or lace. Bohemian tends to be used for the wider lifestyle and interiors, while boho is the everyday word for the clothes.

The look has had two big moments, in the late 1960s and the 1970s and again in the early 2000s. Each time it borrowed from folk dress, and the peasant blouse sits at its heart.

Colors and Prints That Read Boho

Earthy colors are the backbone of the style: rust, mustard, olive, terracotta, cream and warm brown, with dusty pink and deep teal as softer accents. These shades sit well together, so a boho outfit can mix several of them without looking busy.

Earthy tones are also kind to most complexions. Warm rust and mustard flatter golden and olive skin, while dusty pink, cream and soft teal suit cooler, fairer skin. Keep the shade that suits you best closest to your face, and use the others lower down.

Two kinds of print carry the look. Tribal and geometric patterns borrowed from woven rugs and textiles give a graphic, grounded feel, while ditsy florals feel lighter and more romantic. Both read best at a small scale, since a small print looks handmade where a large one looks bright and loud.

Which Body Types Look Best in Boho Tops?

Loose shapes suit almost every body; the trick is where the volume sits. A gathered or smocked neckline keeps the blouse anchored on the shoulders, so the fullness falls from there rather than from the bust. Showing one defined point, such as the collarbone, the wrist or the waist, stops a relaxed blouse from looking shapeless.

Proportion matters when both halves are loose. A full blouse over a long, full skirt suits taller women best; if you are shorter, pair a relaxed blouse with slim jeans or a skirt that skims the hip, so the outline keeps its shape.

Tuck, Half-Tuck or Leave It Out

Leaving a boho blouse out is the easiest choice over slim jeans or leggings, and it suits the looser, longer shapes best. The hem should end around the hip so the legs still show their length.

A half-tuck, with just the front pushed into the waistband, works well with high-waisted jeans or a flared skirt. It marks the waist without losing the relaxed drape at the back. A full tuck into a long, flowing skirt gives the most 1970s outline, and a thin belt over an untucked blouse gives a similar effect with less fuss.

Lighter fabrics tuck more smoothly than heavy ones. A gauzy or flowy blouse will half-tuck neatly, while a thicker cotton sits better left out.

Common Boho Style Mistakes

The most common mistake is too much of everything at once. Pattern on top, pattern below, fringe, a headband and layers of beads can tip the look into fancy dress. Keep one print and let the rest of the outfit be plain.

The second is ignoring fit. A relaxed blouse still needs a shoulder seam that sits close to your own shoulder, and the sleeve should end where your hand can move freely.
