Both are two garments and both come apart at the waist. The difference is where the top stops. A bikini top finishes under the bust; a tankini top carries on to the waist or the hip. That single measurement decides almost everything else people notice about the two, including how each one behaves out of the water.
It also decides which suits a given day. A 2 piece swimsuit in tankini form stays wearable walking through a restaurant or sitting down to eat; a bikini generally wants something over it first. Neither is more flattering in the abstract — they cover different amounts of the same body, and which reads better depends on what the rest of the day involves.
Support is the other split. A bikini top hangs its weight from the shoulders far more often, while a tankini has room for a proper underband.
Coverage in this shape is structural rather than additive. The top is cut longer through the body, the side seams run from the underarm all the way to the hip, and the fabric is carried on a band rather than hanging from two straps. Adding fabric to a bikini does not produce the same result, because the weight ends up in the wrong place and the extra length has nothing to anchor it.
That is also why a longer top does not have to feel like a heavier one. Modest tankinis reach higher at the neck and lower at the hem using the same weight of cloth as anything else on the rail; the coverage comes out of the pattern rather than out of the fabric. The same logic runs the other way, which is how a cut-away tankini can show more skin without losing the band that holds it up.
The one failure mode worth planning for is the band of skin that appears when the top and the bottom fail to meet. It shows up when a cropped top is paired with a low brief, and it shows up on anyone with a long torso regardless of what they bought or what size they took.
There are two reliable fixes. Raise the bottom: a high waisted pairing gives the top an inch or two of overlap to land on, and the overlap stays put because both edges are elasticated. Or lengthen the top: a hip-length cut worn over shorts or a skirt panel takes the join out of view altogether.
Both are better than the third option, which is pulling at the hem every time you stand up.
A two piece in this shape has to work in two quite different modes, and most descriptions only address one. Swimming, the top wants to be fitted enough that it stays down when you push off; the side seams should follow the body rather than balloon. Out of the water, the same top wants a little ease across the middle so that sitting down does not turn it into a second skin.
That is the argument for a cut that is close through the bust and easier below, and it is why so many people who swim properly end up owning two: a plain fitted one for lengths and a looser one for the rest of the day.
If you only want one, buy the fitted version and let the bottom do the covering. A skirt panel or a pair of shorts adds ease exactly where the day needs it without compromising what happens in the water.
Drying time is the practical difference nobody mentions. Two separate pieces dry faster than one long garment because air reaches both sides of each, and a top hung over a rail dries faster than one folded over a chair. Over a week away that is the difference between putting on something dry each morning and putting on something cold.
It also decides how much you need to pack. Two tops and one bottom cover more days than one full suit and a spare, because the bottom rinses and dries overnight while the tops rotate.
