Everything written about white swimwear treats the garment as one thing. A two piece is not one thing, and the two halves are lined to different standards for reasons that have nothing to do with the color.
A tankini top usually carries a bust lining, sometimes a full front lining, and often a shelf bra as well — three layers in the places that matter. A brief is a single layer with a gusset. It is also stretched tighter over the body and sits closer to skin, which is precisely the condition under which a light fabric turns sheer.
So the sentence worth remembering is that a white set is only as opaque as its bottom half. If a listing describes lining at all, check whether it is describing the top, the bottom or both.
Three signals, in order of reliability. The words fully lined applied to both pieces, which is the only real assurance. A heavier stated fabric weight, since opacity follows weight more closely than it follows color. And texture — a ribbed, crinkled or jacquard surface scatters light and holds up far better than a flat jersey of the same weight.
What is not a signal: the photograph. Studio lighting on dry fabric tells you nothing about the same fabric wet and stretched.
If the bottom is the weak link and you want the top, wear the white top over a bottom in a different color. Nobody reads a set as mismatched when the top is white.
Set against all that, white does two things no other color does. It reads cooler in strong sun, both visually and slightly in fact, since it reflects rather than absorbs. And it makes a tan look like a tan, which is most of why people reach for it in the second week of a holiday rather than the first.
It also shows construction the way black does, from the opposite direction: every seam, every gather and every edge finish is visible. A well-cut white top looks expensive, and a poorly cut one has nowhere to hide either.
Everything above makes white sound like more work than it is worth, so it is worth being clear about when it is the right answer. Late in a holiday, against a tan, nothing else does the same thing. In strong sun it reads cooler than any other color. And with a print on the other half it is the cleanest partner there is.
The version that gives the least trouble is white on one half only. A white top over a dark bottom takes the visual benefit and puts the fabric that has to survive being sat on somewhere it will not show. It is also the arrangement that survives a second season, since the bottom is the piece that discolors first.
For a full white set, a matched pair is the safer purchase than two separates, because both halves were lined to the same standard on the same day.
White does not fade; it stains and it yellows. Sunscreen is the main culprit, particularly the mineral kind, and it sets permanently if it goes through a hot wash or dries in strong sun.
Rinse in cold water before anything else touches it, and rinse the bottom half as carefully as the top. Because the halves discolor at different rates, replacing one is common — and a slightly yellowed brief under a bright white top is more visible than either piece would be alone.
