What Is Bikini Underwear?

Bikini underwear is a cut, not a use. The name describes a brief that sits on or just below the hip, with a leg opening higher than a full brief and a back that covers most of the seat. Cotton, lace or swim knit — the outline is the same, and so is the name.

That also answers what the underwear of a bikini is called. The lower half of a bikini is simply a bikini bottom, and the everyday underwear cut borrowed its name from it once two-piece swimwear had made the shape familiar. The garment came first on the beach and moved into the drawer afterwards.

So the two share a silhouette and differ in almost everything else: fabric, elastic, lining and how they behave when wet. A shopper who knows their size in one can use it as a starting point for the other, but should expect a firmer fit in the water version for reasons covered below.

Bikini Cut, Brief or Hipster

Three everyday cuts get compared most, and each has a close swimwear equivalent worth knowing by name.

• Bikini cut. Sits at the hip with a moderate leg and moderate back coverage. The middle option, and the one most people mean without naming it.
• Brief. Rises to or near the waist with a lower leg line and full seat coverage. In swimwear this becomes the high waisted bottom.
• Hipster. Sits lower on the hip with a wider side panel, so the band runs horizontally instead of angling up. The swim version is usually listed as a low rise bottom.

Against a thong, the difference is all at the back. A bikini cut covers most of the seat; a thong reduces the back to a narrow strip. When comparing the two for swimming, remember that rear coverage is the one thing a front-facing product photograph never shows, so look for the back view before deciding.

Side width is the detail that separates a flattering bikini cut from an uncomfortable one. A narrow side band concentrates pressure on one line across the hip, while a wider one spreads it and lies flatter under a dress or a cover up. The wider band is usually the better everyday choice.

The Same Cut, in Swimwear

Moving the bikini cut into the water changes three things. The fabric becomes a nylon or polyester knit with elastane, which holds its shape wet instead of sagging. The elastic at the leg and waist is made to resist chlorine. And a lining is usually added at the front, because thin knit can turn translucent once soaked.

The practical consequence is that swim bottoms fit firmer than underwear of the same size. Expect the leg elastic to feel more present on dry land; it is calibrated for water, where fabric relaxes and would otherwise drift. If a pair already feels loose before swimming, it will feel looser after the first length of the pool.

Rise is the second decision. Swimwear briefs and high waisted bottoms sit where a full brief would, smoothing the lower stomach under a fitted top. Low waisted styles behave like a hipster and show more midriff. Listings named swimwear panties are worth checking by rise, since the word alone does not tell you where the band sits.

Fabric, and What Changes in Water

Cotton comes up constantly in searches for this cut, and it is the one fabric with no place in a swim version. Cotton absorbs a great deal of water, stretches when wet and dries slowly; the same brief that feels comfortable at home hangs heavy on the body after a swim and stays cold for an hour.

Swim knit does the opposite. It sheds water, recovers its shape and dries far faster in the sun. What to check in a description is the elastane share, since a higher figure holds its shape better through repeated wear, and whether the front panel is lined.

Chlorine, salt and sunscreen wear a swim bottom out faster than washing does. Rinse it in cool fresh water after each swim, press the water out instead of wringing, and dry it flat in the shade. Elastic gives out long before the color fades, and heat is what speeds that up.
