What Is a Low-Rise Bikini?

A low-rise bikini pairs a top with a bottom whose waistband sits well below the navel, usually across the upper hip bones. The rise is the defining feature; the top can be any shape, though triangles, bandeaus and bralettes are the usual partners because they share the same light feel.

The lower half of any bikini is simply the bottom, or a brief on some listings, and rise is the word that places it. Low sits on the hips, mid between hip and navel, high at the navel or above. A low-rise bikini is the set built around the first, with a top already matched to it.

Single-size sets deserve a closer look at this rise. A tie-side bottom adjusts to the hips, so a set sized by the top usually works; a pull-on bottom does not, so check its hip measurement before relying on the bust size alone.

For a two-piece with more fabric at the waist, high waisted bikini sets use the same matched approach with the band lifted to the navel. A mid rise set sits between the two for anyone who wants a little of each look.
