What Is a Bikini Brief?

A bikini brief is a brief with the sides cut away. Where a full brief rises to the waist and wraps the hip in a wide panel, the bikini version sits lower, with a narrower side and a leg opening that curves up toward the hip bone. The seat stays mostly covered; the change is at the sides and the front rise.

The term comes from underwear catalogs, which is why search results mix lingerie and swimwear so freely. In practice it names a position on a scale: more fabric than a string or a tanga, less than a full brief or a boy short. That scale holds whether the fabric is cotton jersey or swim knit.

Are Low-Rise Briefs the Same as Bikini Briefs?

Close, but not identical. Rise describes where the waistband sits; bikini describes how the sides and leg are cut. A low-rise brief sits well below the navel, and a bikini brief usually does too, which is why the two labels overlap on so many listings.

The difference shows in the side panel. A low-rise brief can keep a wide side and a lower leg, running almost horizontally across the hip. A bikini brief narrows the side and lifts the leg, so the band angles upward from the front. One is a question of height, the other of shape.
