What Is a Bandeau Bikini?

A bandeau bikini pairs a bottom with a top made from a single band of fabric wrapped across the bust. Bandeau is French for a strip or band, and the top follows the name closely: a straight upper edge, a straight lower edge and no shoulder straps needed.

Within that simple outline, the front panel is where styles differ, and four versions account for most of them.

• Twist front. The band turns once at the center, forming a soft knot shape that adds depth.
• Ring front. A metal or resin ring joins two halves of the band in the middle.
• Ruffle edge. A frill along the top adds volume and softens the straight line.
• Shirred band. Rows of elastic gather the fabric so it ripples and stretches.

A curved hem is a quieter variation, where the lower edge dips slightly at the center. It gives the band a gentler shape and helps it lie flat beneath the bust.

Before choosing, check the listing for removable or convertible straps, and look in the photographs for loops along the inside of the band. Straps that clip on are quick to change, while ones that tie on take a moment longer but let the length be set freely.
