Plaid, Check or Flannel?

Shoppers often treat these words as one, yet each names something different. Plaid is a pattern: bands of color crossing at right angles to form squares and rectangles. It can be printed or woven into almost any fabric, from cotton to chiffon.

Flannel is a fabric. It is a soft cloth, usually cotton or wool, brushed to raise a fuzzy surface. Flannel shirts are so often plaid that many people use the two words interchangeably, yet a flannel can be solid, and a plaid blouse can be thin and silky.
