Soft looks great on

Gray can flatter almost everyone, but the shade makes all the difference. A grey blouse in a mid or light tone can drain color from pale skin if it sits right at the face with nothing else to lift it, while the same shade looks fresh and soft on warmer or deeper skin.
The answer is usually in the undertone of the gray itself. Cool grays, with a hint of blue, suit cool and rosy skin. Warm grays, sometimes called greige or taupe, with a hint of beige, suit golden and olive skin.
Depth matters as well. Charcoal gives more contrast and suits dark hair and deeper skin, while light dove gray suits fair skin and silver hair, where it can look especially elegant. For a fuller guide to matching colors and skin tones, the teal blouses page explains how undertones work.
If gray feels flat near your face, add a little color close by: a pink or coral lipstick, a bright scarf or a pair of pearl earrings is enough to bring the complexion back to life.
Gray is a true neutral, so it welcomes almost every color. Pink is one of its prettiest partners, from blush to raspberry, and the pairing feels soft and modern. Yellow, from butter to mustard, makes gray look cheerful.
Navy and gray are a classic office combination, calm and polished. Burgundy and plum give gray warmth and depth for fall and winter, and a gray blouse under a burgundy cardigan is a lovely cool-weather outfit.
White and cream keep gray light and fresh, while black makes it sharper and more formal. Denim is always easy, and a gray blouse with blue jeans is one of the simplest everyday outfits.
Colors that can look dull beside gray are those of a similar muted depth, such as khaki, taupe or beige, when they are not clearly lighter or darker. Give them more contrast, or add a brighter accent.
Silver jewelry suits cool grays, and gold suits warmer ones. Pearls look lovely with both.
Patterned bottoms are easy with a gray top. A floral skirt, a plaid trouser or a printed scarf gets a calm backdrop from a gray blouse, and almost any color in the print will pick up well against it.
Heather and marl gray are woven or knitted from threads of slightly different shades, which gives the fabric a soft, flecked look. It feels relaxed and cozy, closer to a favorite sweatshirt than to a formal shirt.
That texture is useful. Marl gray hides small marks and creases better than a flat solid, and it looks softer next to the face. It pairs especially well with denim, white sneakers and a navy or camel cardigan.
Light marl looks fresh in spring and summer, while a darker marl feels warm in fall. A marl gray blouse with a striped or floral print on top adds interest without losing the easy feel, and many of our striped blouses come in similar soft tones.
Dark gray and charcoal are a softer alternative to black, polished for work and easy to wear with most colors. A charcoal blouse under a gray or navy blazer is quietly professional, and it fits well among our work blouses.
Light gray feels fresher and more relaxed, lovely in spring with pastels and in summer with white. It looks gentle with silver hair and pairs well with soft pink, lavender and light blue.
For the brightest contrast with either shade, a soft pink layer works beautifully, and our pink blouses offer many of those tones.
