Business Casual Pants

What Pants Are OK for Business Casual?

Most offices draw the business casual line at the pants, so the quickest way to get it right is to judge style by style. The test is simple: a pair passes if it has a smooth front, a clean hem and a fabric that hangs instead of clinging or wrinkling heavily.

  • Trousers and slacks: Always a safe choice. They anchor any business casual wardrobe and suit the first week at a new job.
  • Wide and straight: Both pass in most offices when the fabric is smooth and the color is solid or quietly patterned.
  • Capri pants: Acceptable in relaxed and summer offices if the cut is tailored; skip anything that looks like gym wear.
  • Flare pants: Fine in most workplaces, especially in black or navy with a heeled shoe under the hem.
  • Chinos and khakis: The classic business casual pant, covered in more detail below.
  • Plaid and checks: Usually fine in muted tones; very large or bright checks lean casual.
  • Cargo pants: Too casual for most offices, because the bulky side pockets read as outdoor or utility wear.

What fails in most workplaces is anything that looks made for the gym or the beach: leggings worn as pants, sweatpants, ripped or faded fabrics, and very short cropped lengths. When in doubt, notice what colleagues and managers wear on an ordinary Tuesday.

Are Khakis Fine for Business Casual?

Yes. Khakis are the original business casual pant, popular in offices in the 1990s precisely because they sat between suit trousers and weekend jeans. A pressed pair in tan, stone or olive works with a blouse, a knit polo or a cardigan in almost any office that calls itself business casual.

The details decide how polished they look. A flat front reads sharper than pleats, an ankle or full length looks more professional than a cropped one, and a smooth twill looks better than a rumpled weave. Many shoppers now choose the khaki color in a pull-on cut, keeping the look while dropping the stiff waistband. Our khaki pants collection gathers camel and tan shades that fill the same role.

Fabric and Fit That Read Polished

Professional pants look professional mainly because of how the fabric moves. A cloth with a little weight drops straight from the hip and holds a crease; a thin, limp one clings and wrinkles by noon. In product descriptions, look for words such as twill, crepe, ponte, suiting or woven, and for a small percentage of spandex or elastane, which helps the fabric recover after hours of sitting.

Business casual dress pants should fit at the waist and hip without pulling, then fall straight or slightly wide toward the hem. Check two things in a mirror: pockets should lie flat rather than flare open, and there should be no horizontal creases across the front of the thigh. If either appears, size up or choose a looser leg.

Length finishes the look. For flats and loafers, an ankle length that just clears the shoe is easiest; with heels, a full length that covers most of the shoe lengthens the leg. Ankle pants and straight leg pants are the two cuts that adapt to the widest range of office shoes.

Business Casual Pants That Still Feel Easy

Comfort and polish now go together. Many office pants use a pull-on elastic waist, flat in front and gathered only at the back, so the pair looks tailored under a tucked blouse but feels relaxed by the end of the afternoon. They are an easy pick as dress pants for business casual offices that also expect long hours at a desk.

Joggers and drawstring styles are the gray area. In relaxed workplaces, a jogger in a smooth, dark fabric with a slim cuff can pass, especially with a blazer on top. Jogger pants in heather knits or with athletic stripes are better kept for weekends. Wide leg pants with an elastic waist are often the more reliable compromise, since the volume hides the waistband.

A simple test before work: sit, stand, and walk to the mirror. If the pair still looks smooth and the waist still feels comfortable, it belongs in the business pants rotation. For stricter dress codes, see our formal pants, and for long desk days, our main work pants page covers comfort in more detail.
