Nice material, light weight, comfortable

Love these pants! They are so comfortable and cool for summer wear!

Formality in pants comes from four details: drape, crease, waistband and color. A formal pair hangs straight from the hip without clinging, often with a pressed crease down the front of each leg that makes the leg look longer. The waistband sits flat, fastening with a hook, button or concealed zip, and the color is dark or quietly neutral.
The fabric has to carry all of this. Smooth weaves such as crepe, gabardine, suiting wool and heavier satin look formal; cotton twill, knit jersey and anything with visible stitching or patch pockets lean casual. Shine is the deciding factor for evening: a soft sheen reads dressy, while matte cotton reads daytime.
Formal dress pants for women follow the same rules as men's suit trousers but come in more shapes, from a slim cigarette cut to a wide palazzo. Any of them can be formal; what matters is the fabric and the finish.
All three names describe overlapping things, and the differences are mostly regional. In American English, pants is the general word for anything worn on the legs, and trousers names the tailored version with a structured waist. In British English, pants means underwear, so trousers covers everything.
Slacks is an older American word for relaxed tailored trousers sold without a jacket; it is still common in dress codes and on store signs. Dress pants is the retail term for any tailored pair meant for work or events, and it overlaps almost completely with trousers. Suit pants are the trousers sold with a matching jacket.
So the black pants a restaurant asks staff to wear, the corporate trousers in an office handbook and the pair you would wear to a wedding can all be the same garment. The name changes with the setting more than the cut. For everyday versions of each, see our trouser pants collection and our black work pants.
Neither: formal pants should skim. They touch the body at the waist and the fullest part of the hip, then fall straight without pulling across the thigh or bagging at the seat. Tension lines across the front, pockets pulled open or fabric folding below the seat are all signs to change the size or the cut.
Leg width is a matter of taste rather than formality. A slim straight leg looks crisp with pumps; a wide leg flows gracefully with heeled sandals and suits anyone who prefers to keep the line of the thigh hidden. Whatever the width, the hem should almost reach the floor with the shoes you plan to wear, so try them on with those shoes before having them altered.
Black is the most formal color and the most useful, matching every top and working from a board meeting to a black-tie dinner. Navy is nearly as versatile and a little softer against the face, and charcoal suits daytime events. Black pants in a smooth fabric are the one formal pair worth owning if you only buy one.
Lighter neutrals such as ivory, beige and pale gray look formal in spring and summer, at daytime weddings and garden parties. They can look casual under evening lighting, so save them for daylight and pair them with a tonal top so the outfit reads as one piece.
Pants are fully accepted at most weddings today, for guests and for mothers of the couple alike. Without a matching suit, the trick is to dress the pants up with the top and accessories so the outfit feels deliberate.
Choose a dressy blouse in satin, chiffon or lace, a sequined shell, or a structured top with interesting sleeves. Tuck it in or let it fall just past the waistband, then add heeled sandals or pumps, a clutch and jewelry with some shine. Wide leg pants in black or a jewel tone look especially graceful in photos, moving like a long skirt when you walk.
For a daytime ceremony, light colors and a softer top suit the setting; for an evening reception, dark pants with a metallic or embellished top feel right. For everyday versions of the same polished look, our business casual pants and work pants pages cover office dressing.
