Teal, Turquoise or Cyan

All three sit between blue and green, and listings use them so loosely that one suit can appear under all three names. The differences are real, though, and they change how a set looks in sun and beside other colors.

Teal is the deepest: a blue-green with a hint of gray that reads rich and slightly muted. Turquoise is lighter and brighter, the shade of shallow Caribbean water and the stone it is named after. Cyan is the clearest and most electric, a pure blue-green with no gray at all.

In practice, a dark teal suits anyone who likes a jewel tone that behaves almost like a neutral, pairing with cream, brown and gold. Turquoise and cyan are brighter statements and look their best in strong sun, where the color seems to pick up the water around it.

Many teal sets use cyan in the product name, so the photograph is a better guide than the word. A daylight photograph, viewed beside a known blue or green, shows which way a shade leans. Blue bikinis and green bikinis sit on either side of the color.

Teal With Brown, Orange or Yellow

The layer worn over the suit can carry the pairing as well. A rust, mustard or sand-colored wrap over a teal set completes the warm contrast for the walk off the beach, while a white one keeps the whole look cooler and crisper.

Ombre Teal Sets

An ombre set fades from one shade to another across the fabric, and teal suits it because the color spans such a wide range, from pale aqua to deep blue-green. The effect recalls water deepening as it moves away from the shore.

The direction of the fade changes how the suit looks. A top that deepens toward the hem and a bottom that lightens toward the leg create a smooth gradient across the body, while a fade that runs the same way on both pieces makes each half look separate.

Ombre sets often come with a wide waistband, which gives the gradient a broad, even surface at the waist and keeps the bottom sitting flat. A mid waisted or high waisted cut shows the most of the fade.

Because the print is a gradient instead of a repeat, checking both the front and back photographs shows where the deepest shade falls, which is the part that draws the eye first. A gentle fade also suits anyone who likes teal but finds a solid block of it too strong, since the paler end softens the color.
