What Makes a Swimsuit Metallic?

Shine on swimwear comes from one of three methods, and they behave very differently once wet. Knowing which one a listing describes is more useful than any photograph, since all three glitter under studio lights.

• Foil or stamping. A thin metallic layer is heat-pressed onto an ordinary swim knit, often in a pattern, for the brightest shine and the crispest edges.
• Metallic yarn. A fine shiny thread is knitted in alongside the stretch fibers, so the gleam runs through the fabric itself.
• Shimmer finishes. A pearly or liquid-look finish covers the whole surface for an all-over glow in place of a pattern.
