Colors That Read as Jamaica

The Jamaican flag uses three colors — black, green and gold — arranged around a gold saltire, and those three are what most people mean by a Jamaica bikini. Worn literally, as a flag print, they make a clear statement for a carnival, an Independence Day celebration or a trip home. Worn loosely, they give a whole range of suits an island feel.

The loose version is often easier to wear. A green bikini with gold hardware, a black set with a green tie, or a yellow bikini top over a black bottom all nod to the palette without looking like a costume. Pick the one color that suits your skin best and use the others as accents.

Deep green and gold both flatter warm and olive skin tones; black works with everything and is the easiest base. Anyone who finds gold difficult near the face can keep it to the bottom half, where it reads as sunny instead of harsh. Green and black together make the most understated version of the palette, and suit anyone who prefers a quieter nod to the flag.

Packing for the Caribbean

Jamaica asks a bikini to handle more than one kind of water. The beaches along the north and west coasts are largely calm and shallow, rivers and waterfalls inland involve climbing over wet rock, and resort pools are about lounging. A suit that covers all three needs a secure fit as much as a good look.

For river and waterfall days, choose a high waisted bikini set or a top with a fixed band, since climbing and sliding test ties quickly. For the beach, a halter or triangle is comfortable in the heat. For the resort, anything goes, and that is the place for the prettiest set in the bag.

Sun is strong year-round at that latitude, and shoulders burn first. A light cover up or a sarong in one of the flag colors doubles as protection and as an outfit for lunch. Darker colors and busy prints also hide the white cast that mineral sunscreen can leave on fabric.

Humidity slows drying, so a second suit to alternate with keeps the elastic in better condition through a week of daily swims, and means there is always a dry one ready for the morning.

Two Piece or One Piece on the Beach

Searches for a Jamaica swimsuit split between two piece and one piece, and both have a place on the trip. A two piece is cooler, dries faster and suits long days in the sun; a one piece stays put through waves and river currents and suits snorkeling well.

A bikini set with a flag-color accent covers most of a holiday. If the plan includes a lot of active water time — rafting, cliff jumping, snorkeling over the reef — a one piece swimsuit is worth packing alongside it.

Whichever you choose, the palette carries across both. A black one piece with a green bikini in the bag gives you the colors of the island in two very different outfits, and a matching sarong ties them together for the evening.

Fit matters more than usual on a trip, since there is no swapping a suit that turns out uncomfortable halfway through the week. Try both pieces at home with some movement — sitting, bending, lifting your arms — before they go in the case. Anything that needs adjusting in the living room will need it far more in the sea or halfway up a waterfall.
