Horizontal or Vertical Stripes on a Bikini

Stripe direction is the first thing to decide on a striped bikini, and on a two-piece it works differently than on a one piece. A bikini has two small areas of fabric separated by skin, so stripes never run long enough to change the outline of the body; what they change is where the eye settles.

Horizontal stripes on a triangle cup or bandeau widen the look of the bust slightly, which suits anyone who wants more shape above the waist. On a bottom, horizontal bands add a little width at the hips, and a narrow waistband in a contrasting stripe marks a clear line at the top of the brief.

Vertical stripes lift. On a triangle cup they run from band to strap and draw the eye up toward the shoulders; on a high waisted bottom they lengthen the front panel. Many sets mix the two, with vertical stripes on the top and horizontal ones below, or use diagonal stripes on a twisted top so the lines follow the drape.

Stripe width works together with direction. Wide bands make the effect stronger, while thin stripes keep it subtle, so a narrow stripe is the easy way to try the pattern for the first time. Whichever you choose, check the photographs where stripes meet a seam; on a well-made piece they line up across the join.

Blue and White or Blue and Brown Stripes

Blue and white is the classic nautical stripe, and the shade of blue changes its character. Navy and white is crisp and traditional; sky or light blue with white feels softer and more summery, closer to a cotton beach shirt. Blue and white bikinis take the pairing into florals and gingham, and navy blue bikinis cover the deeper shade.

Blue and brown stripes are the warmer, more relaxed alternative. Brown softens blue the way sand softens the sea, and the combination looks earthy and a little retro without the sailor association of white. It pairs naturally with tan, cream and gold accessories.

A third stripe color shifts the mood again. A thin white line between blue and brown bands brightens the whole set, while a stripe of yellow or orange makes it sporty; colorful bikinis take multicolor stripes further.

Blue striped sets mix easily with solids. A striped top over a plain navy bottom, or a striped bottom beneath a white triangle, keeps the look light and lets each piece work with other suits in the bag. High waisted bikini sets give stripes a retro shape.

Crinkle and Textured Stripes

Crinkle fabric has a puckered texture set into the knit, and stripes on it look softer and more relaxed than on a smooth surface. The texture also adds a little give, so crinkle tops often feel forgiving to wear.

Texture changes how the stripe reads. On a smooth knit, blue stripes look crisp and graphic; on crinkle or ribbed fabric the edges of each stripe blur slightly, and the set looks casual even in navy and white. Stripes in crinkle fabric often come in softer shades such as powder blue and sand, which suits the relaxed surface.

A textured stripe also photographs with more depth in strong sun, since the ridges catch small shadows, and it hides light creases from packing.

Ribbed stripes behave a little differently from crinkle. The raised ribs run in one direction, often across the stripe, which gives a subtle grid effect up close and a smooth look from further away, and ribbed knits hold their shape well over a long day.

Care is simple: rinse in cool water and dry flat, since wringing can flatten the puckers. Striped bikinis show smooth stripes in more colors, and a textured blue striped set pairs well with a plain white linen cover up.
