Beaded trim runs along an edge, such as the top of a cup, a waistband or a leg opening. It adds a fine line of texture while the rest of the suit stays plain, and it is the most practical version for regular swimming.

Beaded ties thread beads onto the ends of the strings or finish each tie with a single larger bead. They swing a little as you move and add weight to the tie ends, which helps them hang neatly. String bikinis show the tie construction.

Beaded cups carry beads across the surface of the top, sometimes in a pattern or a short fringe. This is the most decorative style, and it suits lounging more than laps.

Descriptions sometimes say hand-beaded. Hand-sewn beads are usually stitched on one at a time, while machine-applied beads are fixed in rows, and a close photograph of the inside of the fabric often shows which method was used.

Bead material changes the look and weight. Glass and seed beads are small and shiny, wooden beads look natural and warm, and shell or acrylic beads are light and easy to wear in the water. Metal beads catch the most light but can grow hot in strong sun, so they suit shorter spells outdoors.

Beaded Triangle or Scoop Tops

Beadwork looks different depending on the neckline it decorates. On a triangle top, beads usually follow the edges of each cup or hang from the neck ties, and the small open shape leaves room for the beads to show against skin. Triangle bikinis cover the cups themselves.

The choice mostly comes down to coverage and style. A beaded triangle looks light and bohemian, while a beaded scoop looks more polished. Either pairs well with a plain matching bottom, which keeps attention on the detail above.

How to Care for a Beaded Bikini

Beads add a little extra care to a swimsuit, since the threads holding them are finer than the seams of the suit. A few habits keep beadwork secure through a summer.

Rinse the suit in cool water after every swim to remove salt, chlorine and sunscreen. Wash by hand with a mild soap, and press water out gently inside a towel, because wringing or twisting pulls on the threads and loosens beads.

Dry the suit flat in the shade. Hanging a wet beaded top by its straps puts the weight of the beads on the ties, and long hours in strong sun can dull colored beads.

Pack beaded pieces away from looped towels and zipped pouches, both of which can snag threads. If a bead comes loose, a small stitch in matching thread fixes it before the ones beside it follow.

Storage is the last step. Fold beaded pieces with a soft cloth between the layers, or keep them in a small pouch of their own, so the beads do not press into the fabric or rub against each other over the winter.
