A great deal of beach jewelry is bought for exactly one setting and then quietly not worn in it, because nobody checked what the piece is made of first. The description is where that gets answered.

Three material families behave differently. Shell, wood and glass beads are unbothered by damp and are the safest choice for a day by the water. Stainless steel holds up well and keeps its finish. Sunscreen and body oil do more to a plated finish than water does, which is worth knowing if a piece is going on before the sunscreen rather than after it. Putting jewelry on last is a small habit that keeps a finish looking new for longer.

The practical rule: take the plated pieces off before going in, and keep the shell and bead pieces on. Nothing in a product description guarantees a finish will survive a swim, so where it matters, buy the material rather than the claim.

Wearing Jewelry With a Swimsuit or a Sundress

Jewelry over swimwear is its own small skill. With a swimsuit there is more skin and less fabric, so one long necklace or one anklet does more than a full set - the outline of the body is already the shape, and jewelry only needs to punctuate it.

With a dress, let the neckline choose the necklace. A high neck takes earrings and leaves the chest alone; a wide or scooped neck leaves a gap that a mid-length pendant fills. That single check settles most of it.
