Which scoop tankini best covers tummy for apple shapes?

Hi! I'm Rachel, 42, apple-shaped with a softer belly after two kids. I'm planning a beach vacation in June and want a scoop tankini that won't ride up or cling to my midsection. Which of these sets gives real tummy coverage without looking like a tent? I also wear a 36C bra and hate wires—will the padded, wire-free top actually hold me in if I swim? And I'm between M and L; should I size up for the blouson styles or trust the size chart?

At 5'2" with a short waist, I know the struggle of tankini tops that bunch up or make you look wider. This Sage Green set has a blouson top that drapes away from the body instead of clinging. The vertical pleats run down the front, so your eye moves up and down rather than across the belly. There’s a side tie knot at the waist, which means you can adjust the gather to sit right at your natural waist—not under your bust. The fabric is 90% polyester and 10% spandex, so it has enough stretch to move with you but won’t turn into a soggy second skin. The scoop neck is modest, and the mid-rise briefs cover the lower tummy without digging in. I’d pair it with a sheer cover-up for the walk to the beach. One honest note: because the top is blouson, it adds a little volume. If you prefer a sleeker line or have a very small bust, this may feel like more fabric than you need. But for apple shapes and anyone who wants to sit, bend, and chase kids without flashing, this is a reliable cut.

Love this bathing suit. It works like a tankini but allows for a two piece look. When I want my belly covered this top works and for a shorter female it hides my short waist. Color is attractive also.

@Ddmp929 Thank you, Ddmp929! That’s exactly what the blouson cut is designed to do—give you two-piece styling without sacrificing coverage. Great point about short waists; the side tie lets you place the waistline where it flatters you.

@mommacheri7 Thanks, mommacheri7! Good to know the size chart worked for you. The 10% spandex gives just enough ease for a regular fit.

The Light Pink Lace Up Tankini Set is made from 92% polyester and 8% spandex. In the lab, that lower spandex ratio means it has a firmer hand feel and slightly less stretch than an 18% spandex swimsuit. On the body, you get more structure: the ribbed knit holds its shape through a full day of swimming and sitting. The ruched neckline and double straps are not just decorative—they distribute tension across the shoulders, so the top stays put. The high-waisted, feather-print bottoms are opaque and have a smooth waistband that doesn’t roll. One limitation: the 8% spandex content means recovery is good, but it’s not as forgiving for a very curvy hip if you’re between sizes. If you carry more weight in your lower half, I’d size up in the bottoms or check the hip measurement. Also, the pink dye is lovely but it’s still a dyed garment—wash it in cold water with like colors and avoid prolonged chlorine soak to keep the bloom.

I am highly satisfied with this swimsuit, as it offers an excellent fit. While the leg openings of the bottoms appeared slightly large or stretched, the overall product is commendable.

@dwynn6966 Thanks, dwynn6966! That leg-opening detail is worth noting. The briefs have a relaxed leg line; if you prefer a snugger hold, you can choose a size down or go for a short-style bottom.

@sbaker1127 Thank you! That matches the regular fit—the ribbed knit has enough structure for true-to-size ordering.

This navy floral tankini is a stylist’s secret for pear shapes and postpartum tummies. The tank top is A-line, so it skims over the midsection without sticking. The fabric has vertical pleats that work like an optical illusion—they pull the eye down and make the torso look longer. The back has criss-cross straps and a metal ring cutout, so when you turn around you still look put-together. The matching boyshorts give more thigh coverage than a standard brief, which means no thigh-rub and no riding up when you walk. The fabric is 90% polyester and 10% spandex, with a smooth hand and high elasticity. The navy background hides sunscreen smudges better than a light color. Fit caveat: this set runs regular, and the shorts have a relaxed leg opening. If you’re between sizes and prefer a firmer bottom, size down for the shorts or use the adjustable straps to customize the top. The multi-way straps mean you can wear them straight or criss-cross, but don’t expect underwire-level lift—this is wire-free, with removable pads that add shape rather than push-up support.

@jacquelinegunn56 Thanks, Jacqueline! 'Comfortable' is the highest compliment for a swimsuit that has to work all day. The A-line drape and stretchy knit are exactly why it feels easy.

As a buyer, I look at what people reorder. This sage green patchwork tankini has 155 reviews with a 4.5 average, and the feedback points to true-to-size fit and easy wear. It’s 82% nylon and 18% spandex, which is a better ratio for swimwear than many cheaper sets: nylon dries faster and resists pilling, while the spandex gives the recovery that keeps the top from bagging out. The mesh shoulder panels are a thoughtful detail—they add breathability without showing too much. The gathered neckline draws the eye up, and the A-line hem gives the stomach room to breathe. It comes with a boy-short bottom, so you’re not constantly adjusting. Price-wise, at $43.98, it’s in the sweet spot for a vacation suit you can wear for a full week. One practical complaint to know: because the top is loose and the fabric is stretchy, some users with a smaller bust may feel the top has too much empty space. The removable pads help, but if you’re an A cup, you may need to tighten the adjustable straps or choose a more fitted silhouette.

Love love love this suit!! Fits beautifully; bra holds your breast up and comfortably. Doesn’t show my belly fat. Cannot say enough about it. Got lots of compliments. I’m in my 70s so it was just what I needed.

@Jeanann70471 Thank you, Jeanann! Your note about the bra holding comfortably is gold—this set has a built-in padded bra without wires, so it supports without squeezing.

This blue tropical set is built around an X-shape tank: the high-waist bottom and the ruched top meet at a point that visually creates a waist even if you don’t have one. The ruching on the bodice is strategic—it creates texture and shadow so the midsection reads softer. The shorts are dark, which visually minimizes the hip area, and the white tropical print on top pulls attention up. In terms of fabric, it’s 82% polyester and 18% spandex, so it has a soft, almost buttery hand feel and plenty of stretch. The matching idea: because the set has a navy background, you can pair it with a white or yellow cover-up and metallic sandals for a pulled-together resort look. One honest note: the top is cut with a high neck and wide straps. If you have broad shoulders, this can feel a bit covered; if you prefer more shoulder freedom, try a different silhouette. Also, the shorts are regular-fit, so if you like a firmer leg line, you may want to size down.

I am really pleased with my two piece swim suit. It is a perfect size with good bust support. After ordering I read a report that it floats when in water so I tried it out in my friends hot tub. Lying and sitting in the water it didn’t rise at all. Only when we turned on the highest bubble switch did it fill up with air and caused a lot of amusement. I didn’t buy it for bubbling hot tubs though and know it will be great in the sea or swimming pool.

Jade Thompson1 week ago

@cbhougham Thanks for sharing that test! The air-trapping happens in high-aeration hot tubs; for normal swimming and pool use, the fabric drains and stays close to the body.

I wore this dusty blue tankini for a full beach day, and here’s what surprised me: the gathered neckline doesn’t gape when you lean forward, and the scalloped edge at the hem looks sweet but doesn’t dig in. The fabric is 82% polyester and 18% spandex, so it has good stretch and a smooth, opaque finish. The matching briefs have a mid-rise waist that sits below your belly button but high enough to smooth the lower tummy. I also like that the set includes both top and panty—no mixing sizes. Now the honest part: this is not a high-support sports suit. It’s wire-free with removable pads, so if you’re a D cup and planning to swim laps, you’ll get more bounce than you want. For sunbathing, wading, and beach volleyball without sprinting, it’s great. Also, the hollow-out detail at the side means it’s not the most modest choice if you want full-side coverage. Check the measurements if you’re between sizes; the waistband is forgiving but the leg opening is fitted, so size up for a looser bottom.

This deep green tankini is my pick if you want more coverage without losing shape. The halter neckline is the key: it draws the eye up to your shoulders and creates a lift effect without underwire. The skirted bottom is a gift—it covers the upper thighs and gives a flared line that balances a wider hip. The tropical motif is bold, but the dark green background keeps it from feeling loud. The fabric is 82% polyester with 18% spandex, so it moves with you and recovers quickly after you get out of the water. It also has side ties at the waist, so you can adjust how much drape you want over the tummy. What to watch: the halter style puts pressure behind your neck. If you have neck or shoulder issues, make sure the tie isn’t too tight; the adjustable straps help. The skirted bottom is not designed for serious swimming—it’s more for resort lounging and poolside photos. If you plan to swim laps, choose a sleeker silhouette.

This mint patchwork tankini uses 82% nylon and 18% spandex—the same high-stretch base as premium activewear. The side slit and drawstring waist let you dial in the fit, which is rare in swimwear. The board shorts include a real pocket, so you can carry a key or card without a pool bag. The fabric is quick-drying and has a soft nylon hand, not a scratchy swimsuit feel. The limitation: the shorts have an elastic waist, and some reviewers found the leg opening a little looser than expected. If you’re between sizes, or your hips are narrow, size down for the shorts. The top’s patchwork panels and shirring add texture; if you prefer a smooth, plain surface, this might feel busy. For tummy coverage, the flowy top with side slits drapes away from the body, but it’s not compressive. Pair it with high-waist briefs if you want extra smoothing.

I like it. The first one I ordered was on back order so they offered me some other choices, similar to the one I picked. It's very nice. I usually wear XL, but I might have been ok with a L, feels a little loose.

Nina Kowalski◆ Invited Review1 week ago

@Shirlelder58 Thanks, Shirlelder! That sizing note is helpful. The drawstring waist helps, but if the top feels loose, the regular fit does run slightly generous—sizing down might work if you prefer a closer fit.
