Everyday shapes make up most of the women's dresses here - styles that go to work, to lunch and to the school run without a change of plan. Lengths run short, midi and maxi, sleeves run from none to full length, and a good number arrive as a dress and cardigan pairing that saves deciding what goes over the top. Print or plain is the last call, and it changes more than color.

One garment, one decision, done before the coffee. That is the real argument for a dress on a weekday, and it holds only if the dress can handle a desk chair, a car and a supermarket aisle without asking for attention in between.
Three things decide whether it does. Fabric that recovers from being sat on, a neckline that holds its position when you lean forward, and enough width through the hip to walk at speed. Everything else on a product page is secondary to those three.
Pockets are the small detail worth looking for in the description, because they change what you carry and whether a jacket is needed at all.
Color choice does quiet work on a weekday too. A mid or deep shade takes a coffee mark better than a pale one and photographs the same in an office as it does outdoors, which is why the everyday dresses that get worn most tend to be the darker ones in the wardrobe.
Length is the fastest way to narrow a long list, and each of the three behaves differently once you move. Short finishes above the knee and asks the least of your shoes. Midi lands mid-calf and is the most particular about heel height. Maxi reaches the ankle and reads as the most covered of the three.
The midi length is where most sizing regret comes from, and the reason is usually the calf rather than the waist. A hem that finishes at the fullest part of the calf shortens the leg visually; the same dress two inches longer or shorter does not.
Maxi has its own check. The distance from shoulder to floor varies far more between people than any size chart admits, so find the total length measurement in the description and hold a tape to your own shoulder before ordering.
A dress that arrives with its own cardigan solves a real problem - on its own a dress is a summer garment, and with a layer it becomes a three-season one. The two colors are matched at the factory, so the pairing is settled before it reaches you.
Worn together the set reads as one outfit. Worn apart it is two, because the cardigan goes over women's tops just as easily and the dress carries on alone once the afternoon warms up.
Air conditioning is the everyday case for one of these. A matched layer sits on the back of an office chair without looking like it was borrowed from somewhere else.
When a set is bought for the dress alone, check the cardigan length against the dress hem in the photo. A short cardigan over a maxi cuts the line high on the body, and a long one over a short dress covers the very part of the dress you chose it for.
Sleeve options run the full range, and the choice has more to do with where you will be standing than with the month. Sleeveless suits a hot car and an outdoor lunch. Half and three quarter sleeves handle a room that cannot decide on its own temperature. Long sleeves carry a dress into autumn with nothing over it.
Upper arm fit is what to read closely on a sleeved dress. A sleeve cut close through the bicep restricts reaching more than the bust measurement suggests, and it is the most common reason a dress that fits everywhere else goes back.
Sleeveless styles lean on what is already in the wardrobe - a cardigan for indoors, and for a wide-cut shoulder or a low back, an adhesive bra keeps the neckline clear.
The same dress in a floral and in a plain navy is two different garments once it is on. Print carries the eye across the fabric and softens the outline of a seam, while a plain color shows every line the pattern would have hidden, including the good ones.
Scale is the part worth judging from the photo. A small, dense repeat reads almost as a solid from across a room, and a large motif keeps its shape and puts visual weight wherever it lands - which is why one print behaves differently on a short dress and on a maxi.
Plain colors are easier to build around. They take a necklace or a pair of earrings without competing, and they carry sandals in almost any shade, which a busy print does not always do.
